Continuous Beam Analysis - Stiffness Method

Hi everyone!

I'm sharing with you this worksheet hoping it will help you extract moments, forces and supports reactions from the continuous beam (>=2 spans) for further beam design according the codes you use.

Please let me know if you find errors or want to improve the code (calculation time is around 1 min for a 5-spans beam).

Hi,

Thank you for sharing.

Terry

Thanks for sharing. This is for Prime, isn't it? no chance of mcad 15 version?

Yes. For Prime 5. I don't have the MC15.

IMPROVED CODE!

I can no longer edit my post, but here I add an improved worksheet for general loading conditions.

English and Spanish versions.

You can attach them here in a new message.

I very much liked the original post. Did you really mean to share your improved worksheet with password locked calculations?

rgunwaldsen, Yesterday, I updated the files in the mediafire link, without password. I'm sorry but I forgot to attach those files here. I did not knew how to attach two files.

So, here it is. Those two improved worksheets without password. What is improved: More than 1 UDL over a span. Any number of conc. vertical loads and moments as you want.

I attach here a tutorial video (in Spanish) for the worksheet.

Kudos and thanks.

Would someone who has Prime 5 mind printing this to PDF so I can take a look at it? I only have Prime 4. Thanks!

Here's the file converted to Prime 4 for you.

You (or someone else) may be also interested in the improved versions (See Alvaro's post of 2019-10-06)...

Hi

I like the Continuous Beam Analysis Improved version. I have made some improvements to allow different "Youngs modulus" inputs and values of "I" for different beams. Converted to M-Prime 10.0, have added the missing "Excel Component" and converted to English (Sorry apologise the Spanish speakers that I am not).

Something that I am unable to get to work is the Shear Diagram.

I have attached the file for someone smarter than me to have a look.

Kind Regards

Richard

Something that I am unable to get to work is the Shear Diagram.

V is a vector, so it should read simply V in the plot you tried and not V(x).

x in your sheet is still a range, so the plot does not work.

There was a convenient, but undocumented way to turn a range into a vector by simply using an inline evaluation.
This seems to have done with x in the sheet you converted. But unfortunately starting with Prime 10 this trick does not work anymore and Prime 10 offers no alternative.

So I added a small utility function which turns a range into a vector to make the plot work.

Thank You, Werner_E

I did say someone much smarter than me would be able to work it out.

I have been using MathCAD for 5 weeks now, learning a lot of other very bright people so Thank You to every one.

Cheers

Richard
