Save Object dialog

Save Object dialog

The Save Object dialog presents document names as both a sequential name and a Common Name.

I had expected that one should not alter the sequential name, and enter a meaningful name for the Common Name.

However the document is saved with the sequential name which is meaningful to only a few.

How should we utilise these name fields?

Michael,

The "Common Name" is a parameter used to represent a common or descriptive name for a model. All files are saved as their file name. For example, a file name for a part at a company might be 01234569-a.prt, the Common Name may be FRONT COVER.

The Common Name parameter can be automatically placed in a title block or referenced within Windchill.

Regardless, this should not concern you when saving an object, the only real action you would typically take from the dialog box you have shown is to click OK or press Enter on the keyboard to save the open file.

If you are saving a model file, the name of the model being saved can be defined when you create the model or using Rename after the fact. In the example you have shown, you are saving a .sec file, this can be named when it is created or using Save a Copy (although users rarely have the need to save a section file).

Regards,

Adam

I posted this issue as a product idea, since the common name is indead meaningful to us :

Keep original Common Name during Save a Copy

When we copy a base plate to a new part, it 's very likely to become a base plate again. After copying a fairly big assembly, it is annoying to see the common names for new parts to be empty. Please vote !
