Can't pick in menu manager

Can't pick in menu manager

Running Creo 2.0 M070.

I have run into this on a fairly regular basis but can't seem to find the common thread connecting the behavior ...

I'll be running along just fine (for hours or even days sometimes) and I go to something that pops open Menu Manager, I try to pick and nothing happens. No action, no confirm, no cancel - nothing. (Funny though, with each click I get a bell in my headphones - bell is off in config.pro)

Sometimes you can get out by selecting a ribon item that doesn't utilize the MM so it closes and you can continue. If however you go back into MM for some reason (any reason) it's still hosed.

Other times you need to click your way out to move on and your stuck, only option is to kill the session.

Somewhere along the way MM gets messed and it just can't right itself.

At one point PTC said it was a because my config.pro was reading a certain option file during startup, I removed it, and the problem persists.

Has anyone seen this, all suggestions are worth a try to me.

Thanks, ScottR.

Scott,

Are you on Win7?
This sounds a lot like a problem that I had with Win7 and the active window
not pop-ing forward.
The "Bell" your hearing is not the Pro/E Bell, its the Windows warning
bell telling you that you cant click on anything else until you address the
pop-up... Which is hidden, so you can't actually click it. Very
Frustrating!!!

If you do a web search on the subject you will find a couple different
"registry" fixes. One of them should cure your problem.
If you've never done it before, be very careful when messing with your
Registry. (Back it up first) Or, work with your IT department to make
sure it gets done correctly.

Good Luck

A way to get out of the immediate problem, if it's a hidden window, may be to hold 'Alt' then press 'Esc' repeatedly until the offending window cycles to the front.

Jonathan

Or even Alt-Tab. This shows in a window all open programs/dialog boxes. (However, there are one or two exceptions)

I thought that bell was an MS programer getting his wings.

that doesn't work if it's an Action window, and that's what this always is!
I have this happen often too on windows 7 and it's  not  a  Creo problem
(we're still on wf 4) .. it happens in other programs too .. like spell
check in Lotus notes.  Sometimes esc hit several times will get you out of
it in other programs,.. but that has never helped in Pro/e 😞

This seems too simple, so you’ve probably already tried it, but in case you haven’t. When I have a hidden window problem with ProE, I am usually able to get the hidden window to pop back to the front by minimizing ProE and re-selecting it on the task bar to bring it back up.

Kelly

This isn’t going to solve all your issues of windows popping up behind other windows, but it will reduce your level of frustration. I wrote this a couple of years ago when we went to Windows 7.

Since we went to Windows 7 we’ve had this irritation that some of the windows that ProE pops up, appear behind ProE, not on top of it. So you just sit there waiting for ProE to do something, getting angry wondering why the damn thing is taking so long before you notice in the task bar that there is another window behind ProE waiting for you to do something with it.

I’ve found a solution to this problem

Also, the hidden window usually (at least for me) shows on the task bar like this:
[cid:image003.png@01CF39F6.71084860]
and the icon can be clicked on to bring the window forward.

Thanks Kelly and all the other “hidden” window theorists.
I have tried the window minimize/maximize routine. I’ve tried the task bar icon routine (no extra windows indicated).
I’ll be verifying the <alt><esc> and <alt><tab> routines next time the lockup happens but I doubt this will be the cure all.

I’d like Bernie to be more specific about the registry fixes. The search brings up a lot of stuff about Win 7, missing windows and pop-ups but nothing right up my alley.

The aspect of this that has me convinced it is CREO related is that:

“Sometimes you can get out by selecting a different ribbon item that doesn't utilize the MM so the MM pop-up closes and you can continue your session. If however you go back into something that uses MM for some reason (any reason) it's still hosed.
But the bell does sound like a windows thing – frustrating!

Scott, A request to be more specific, so, here you go...

I was hesitant to do this because as I said in my original post, your
problem sounds "a lot like" the problem that I had, but not specifically.
My problem was not directly related to the MM, and it was also happening
to me outside of Creo. When I had multiple windows open in Creo and tried
to change windows, the new window would not always pop-forward, therefore
triggering the "windows bell". also, outside of Creo with multiple web
browsers, e-mail, and Office programs... they would sometimes pop-behind
rather than pop-forward.
So, Below is the registry fix I used for my Win7 problem, and as a side
benefit it also fixed my Creo problem.
