ProE users,

I am having a network crisis. I currently have 8 floating licenses for
ProE wf3 and my network keeps
crashing, causing Pro to not respond. In the meantime while my MIS dept
upgrades the network I am considering changing to a fixed license for my
users on there local machines. Then when the network gets upgraded
switch back to a floating license. How much work does this involve? Any
other ideas?

Brad,

As long as you're on maintenance it shouldn't be too painful for only 8 users/licenses. You will need to get the MAC address of the network cards on the computers you want to transfer the licenses to. You'll need to get new license files from PTC. Not sure how much proof they will need that you removed the licenses from your network. After that, you will need to install the license manager on each computer, install the new licenses you receive from PTC and re-run the ptcsetup program to point to the local license on their respective computers. Sounds like a lot of effort, but it's not that bad. After the network upgrade, you will need to run the reverse, i.e. MAC address of network license server, install new licenses (or re-install the un-installed current one) and re-run PTC setup on the client machines.

Brad, you could also simply have your users "borrow' licenses from the
server instead of using fixed licenses. You can borrow for up to several
weeks, but remember you can't put back a license early. If you will
have intermittent access, maybe once a week would be enough.

Hi Brad,
As I understand it another possibility is to look at installing a floating
licence on each local machine so that it the network is down then those
workstations can continue using their own licence. Apart from the work of
doing those installs the extra work is now that any workstation that needs
to pick up a licence now needs to look for multiple servers rather than
one. This can also be a good solution if you use mobile workstations
(laptops).

You did not state where your server was located or if you are using
Intralink or other needed network services. My suggestion would be to
isolate your portion of the network. Put in a router or switch and make
sure all your users are directly connected to it and that the license server
is connected to it. Then the rest of the network can burn and you still
would be able to run just fine.
