How to fit long equations on a page

How do you fit a long equation that overruns the right margin onto the page width using Mathcad Prime 3.0? I have not been able to find any way to format the equation region to stop and continue on the next line/space below. Earlier versions of Mathcad have a formatting feature for this. Thanks in advance.

You are probably speaking of equations you enter manually, not expressions which are results of evaluations, right?

The sad truth is that there simply is no way to force linebreaks or something similar.

We can move the right margin in Mathcad Prime:

This doesn't work when we input long expressions. And as Jim wrote about a formatting feature in earlier version he seems to be in need for an input solution.

Furthermore moving the margin won't help if he wants his definition be seen complete in a printed report.

Changing paper orientation to landscape and changing the fontsize to something smaller (but this affects the whole worksheet!) are workarounds which may be useful in some situations but are nevertheless not adequate. The same goes for breaking an assignment into parts like part1:=a+b+c part2:=e+f+g variable:=part1 + part2.

It was already often claimed here - we need linebreaks for input and output of expresssions.

Some times I do so - a furmula in the collapsed area, a picture for the view:

Thats sure is a good idea and at least a way to create readable printed reports unless you forget to update the pic when a parameter is changed. But it really shouldn't be necessary to resort to that kind of workarounds.

Thanks, I know it

Sorry, what parameter?

The formula is permanent and the picture is permanent too!

Guess I was thinking in the wrong direction. You are right, as you don't show/use an inline evaluation in your pic its permanent.

Valery,

I tried inserting a long equation into a collapsible area but there does not appear to be an option to move the right margin as you have shown. I'm using Prime 3.0. Are you using an earlier version? If you are using Prime 3.0, could you please provide a little more detail in your answer.

Thanks,

Jim

Yes, telling from the screenshot Valery used Mathcad 15 for demonstration but the trick can be applied to Prime as well.

But I think you misunderstood what Valery had done - its just a fake. Good enough for making a printed report look better.

  1. You hide the too long assignment in a collapsed region. As we cannot edit an area (unlike as in Mathcad15) we cannot hide that region completely in Prime - the horizontal line will be printed in the report 😞
  2. You make a screenshot of the too long equation and edited it in an image processing software or do it as shown in the attached sheet. Then insert the picture below the collapsed region. It should look like you do the assignment here but its just a pic. In Mathcad 15 and below you won't see a difference, but in Prime cut and paste is so mediocre that the inserted pic is blurred and really doesn't look good.Nevertheless Prime is a progress, not in program quality but in marketing.
  3. below the pic you place the evaluation of the assigned variable.

Maybe Valery has some tricks and tips as to do the whole thing more efficient.

It is not quite good trick to show pictures not real formulas... Sorry...

Some peaple try to insert in Mathcad this formula with sin from my Mathcad server and... go to bugs...

I think we can do it only with a (long) symbolic result (see please my first answer above) or with matrix but not with normal formula. I will try morning...
