Field Service Mobile 10.7.8 - What to Expect

There will be an upcoming 10.7.8 release of the Field Service Mobile client for iOS and Android.  This release will only have minor changes related to the support of iOS and a fix for unsupported versions of Android.  Once the official release of iOS9 is available in mid September , PTC will begin our final verification testing so that we can release 10.7.8 to the app stores in the upcoming weeks.  For this release, we will post both Android and iOS versions to their respective app stores at the same time.  This will result in Android users receiving the updates up to two weeks earlier than iOS users.  Below is a quick summary of what to expect in 10.7.8.

iOS - The testing of the 10.7.x version on the latest builds of the iOS 9 beta has not identified any issues within the mobile app.  If the final verification testing with the official iOS9 release goes well, there may be no changes required in the mobile app to support this iOS update.  However, any device using iOS 9 must communicate with the server over HTTPS using TLS 1.2 SSL with a valid and verifiable certificate (reference: Field Service Mobile and iOS 9for more information).  Please take the necessary steps to update your web server security in support of iOS9.  The release of 10.7.8 will add support for iOS 9 and drop support for iOS 7.

Android - The 10.7.x version of the mobile app does not officially support the Android 5.x operating system. Despite the fact that this version of Android is unsupported, we do understand that more and more users of the 10.7.7 version of the mobile client are being updated to the Android 5.x operating system.  Until this past spring (May/June), many users were successful in using the 10.7.x mobile app on Android 5.x.  However we have had reports of users on Android 5.x not being able to use the mobile app after updates made to their phones. Starting with Android 5.0, Android System WebView has been separated from the Android operating system and is updated independent of the operating system. This is important as Android System WebView updates released after our 10.7.7 release have been found to break our application. This issue has been resolved in our 11.1 release and the fix has been backported to the 10.7.8 release. This fix in 10.7.8 will resolve the issue caused by the update to the Android WebView component.  Be aware that even after this change, the 10.7.x version of the app will still not be officially supported on Android 5.x.
