  Create Your Application Guide UI Part 3    Step 5: Add Widgets to Mashup    At this point, you should have an understanding of how the Widgets in your Mashup relate to the data from devices you've connected via the ThingWorx platform.   Scenario   Now, let's try to imagine a real-world scenario. For this example, assume that you are in a company developing an IoT application utilizing ThingWorx Foundation.   Developer Role Responsibility Edge Developers Utilize the Edge MicroServer, Software Development Kits, or ThingWorx Kepware Server to connect devices and bring data into the platform. Backend Developers Created Things, Thing Templates, and Thing Shapes to store and manipulate the data within ThingWorx Foundation. Frontend Developer Tasked with taking the IoT data and creating an interface with which your users can interact to gain insight from the data. In this scenario, you are the Frontend Developer. The Thing you imported previously represents those Edge and Backend Developers’ work. The data is all there. Specifically, let's assume that this Data Model represents a factory inventory system. You want to quickly build a GUI that is a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to display the current counts of various products in your warehouse, while also allowing you to manually edit those counts if you receive a report that an IoT scanner in the warehouse has malfunctioned. Since this is a real factory, inventory is constantly increasing and decreasing as manufactured parts are completed or shipping orders are fulfilled. In this lesson, we'll simulate these changes by a 10-second-timer which will increment the counts until a shipping order has been fulfilled (100 total parts), at which point the current inventory count for that part will be reset.   Create the Mashup   Follow the subsequent steps to create an MVP GUI for the example scenario: Click Browse > VISUALIZATION > Mashups > + New. Keep the default of Responsive (with NO Responsive Templates chosen), and click OK in the pop-up window. In the Name field, enter MBQSMashup.   If the Project field is not already set, search for and select PTCDefaultProject.  At the top, click Save. At the top, click Design. On the left, click the Left Arrow to slide-back the navigation pane, leaving more room for the Mashup Builder. At the topleft on the Layout tab, for Positioning, check the radio-button for Static.   Add Labels   Follow the subsequent steps to add Labels that clarify GUI sections of the application. Select the Widgets tab, then drag-and-drop three Label Widgets onto the central Canvas.   With the top Label Widget selected (by clicking on it), change the DisplayName to label-gears-count and hit the Tab key on your keyboard to lock in the modification. NOTE: You can find the DisplayName and all other Widget Properties in the bottom-left of the Mashup Builder. Changing the Widget DisplayNames to recognizable values is highly recommended, as it assists with your logic inspection in the bottom-center Connections window.        3. With the newly-named label-gears-count still selected, type Gears Count in the LabelText field and hit the Tab key.       4. Click on the middle Label; then, in the bottom-left Widget Properties panel, change the DisplayName to label-pistons-count and LabelText to Pistons Count.       5. Similarly, change the bottom Label's DisplayName to label-wheels-count and LabelText to Wheels Count.       6. Click Save.   Add TextBoxes   Follow the subsequent steps to display some information on the various part-counts in our inventory. Drag-and-drop three Text Field Widgets onto the central Canvas.   With the top Text Field Widget selected, change the DisplayName to textfield-gears-count and hit the Tab key.   Change the middle Text Field's DisplayName to textfield-pistons-count, and hit the Tab key. Change the bottom Text Field's DisplayName to textfield-wheels-count, and hit the Tab key. Click Save.   Add Checkboxes   We want to display that inventory counts have been manually set when something went wrong, rather than have someone assume that the information is current and coming from an IoT sensor. This also allows us to flag any sensors that are experiencing issues. Follow the subsequent steps to create checkboxes. Drag-and-drop three Checkbox Widgets onto the central Canvas.   With the top Checkbox Widget selected, change the DisplayName to checkbox-gears-manual and the Label property to Gears Manually Set. Change the middle Checkbox's DisplayName to checkbox-pistons-manual and Label to Pistons Manually Set. Change the bottom Checkbox's DisplayName to checkbox-wheels-manual and Label to Wheels Manually Set.   Click Save.   Add Buttons   After our manual count has been entered, we need to trigger storing it in the backend. We can do this with a Button Widget. In addition, it would be helpful to be able to update the changing counts in the Textboxes without having to reload the entire Mashup. Follow the subsequent steps to add Buttons. Drag-and-drop two Button Widgets onto the central Canvas.   With the top Button Widget selected, change the DisplayName to button-manual-set, the Label to Manually Set Counts, and click-and-drag the right-side of the Button to expand its size.   With the bottom Button Widget selected, change the DisplayName to button-manual-retrieve, the Label to Manually Retrieve Counts, and click-and-drag the right-side of the Button to expand its size.   Click Save.   Resize the Mashup   Follow the subsequent steps to enable the Mashup to fit on a smartphone screen. Click-and-drag your Widgets around the Mashup such that they look roughly like the pictures shown above. Click-and-drag the right-side of the Mashup, pulling it to the left to reduce the horizontal size. Click-and-drag the bottom of the Mashup, pulling it up to reduce the vertical size.   Click Save.         Click here to view Part 4 of this guide.

Create Your Application Guide UI Part 2    Step 4: Bind Data to Widgets   Mashup Data Services allow you to access IoT data so you can push data to the platform's backend as well as pull data into the Mashup itself. In the table below, we describe some common Mashup Data Services that enable that functionality: Service Name Description GetProperties Pulls in a particular Thing's Properties, as well as the associated current values contained within those Properties. GetProperties has an option to automatically update the Mashup whenever a Property value changes. GetPropertyValues Pulls in a particular Thing's Properties and their associated current values. However, it does so in an All Data grouping, opening the possibility of assigning all Properties to the same Widget. This can be helpful with some Widgets, such as the List Widget. SetProperties Pushes a value from some Widget (Checkbox, TextBox, etc.) into the Property of a Thing. NOTE: Using a combination of a "Get" and "Set" Mashup Service establishes a bidirectional communication between the Mashup and the backend IoT data storage.   Import an Entity   In order to focus on the Mashup Builder in this lesson, we have created a Thing for you to download and import. This Thing has predefined Properties and associated Values which will simplify the demonstration of binding data to Widgets in subsequent steps. Download and unzip the attached MBQS_Entities.zip file. In the bottom-left, click the "up/down arrows" for Import/Export, then Import.   In the Import pop-up window, click Browse.   In the OS's pop-up, navigate-to, select, and open the MBQS_Entities.twx file you downloaded earlier.   Click Import.   Click Close.   Retrieve Data   You now have a Thing called MBQSThing from which you can retrieve data. To demonstrate this, we'll use the GetPropertyValues Service. At the top-right of Mashup Builder, click the Data tab.   Click the + symbol.   In the Add Data pop-up window's Entity filter field, type mbqs.   Select the MBQSThing.   In the Services Filter field, type getprop.   Click the right arrow to select GetPropertyValues. The GetPropertyValues Service for MBQSThing has now been added to the Selected Services section on the right side of the Add Data pop-up window. Check the box for Execute on Load under Selected Services. Checking this box causes the GetPropertyValues Service to execute as soon as the Mashup is loaded. 8. Click Done.        9. At the top, click Save. Note how the GetPropertyValues Service now appears in the top-right under the Data tab.   View Data Connections   In the top-left of the Mashup Builder, click the Explorer tab, select the Mashup itself, and you can see the connections between the Mashup and the Data sources.   Mashup Builder Section Description Data Previously empty, now has a reference to the GetPropertyValues Service of the MBQSThing. GetPropertyValues On the Data tab, click GetPropertyValues. The Connections window in the bottom-center will update. Bindings Shows the logical flow of the Mashup. In this instance, it shows how GetPropertyValues is called from the Event triggered by the Mashup being Loaded in a web browser. This means that all Properties of the MBQSThing will be available to the Mashup as soon as your UI is opened.   Bind Widget to Property   Follow the steps below to place a Widget in the Mashup and bind the Property named Gauge_Value (of MBQSThing) to it. On the left-side of the Mashup Builder, select the Widgets tab. In the Filter Widgets search box, type gauge. Drag-and-drop a Gauge Widget onto the central Canvas area.   On the right-side, expand GetPropertyValues > Returned Data > All Data. There is a clear left arrow pointing away from the Gauge_Value Property. This indicates that this Property is to be used to set the value on something else. If the arrow had been pointing towards the Gauge_Value Property, that would indicate that it was ready to accept an external value. The clear status of the arrow indicates that it has not yet been tied to anything.        5. Drag-and-drop MBQSThing > GetPropertyValues > Returned Data > All Data > Gauge_Value onto the Gauge Widget in the central Canvas area.          6. On the Select Binding Target pop-up, select Data.       7. At the top, click Save.       8. Click View Mashup. You must enable pop-ups in order to view the Mashup in a new tab.   In your new Mashup, notice that the Gauge has been set to the Gauge_Value default value of 25. In a real-world scenario, you would likely utilize an IoT sensor that would report back to the Thing storing the value. When the Mashup loads, that value would be set to the real-world sensor data value.   Maintain cookies and security information by implementing session parameters in your application.   Guide Concept   This project will introduce creating and accessing session data from a User logged into your application. Session data is global session-specific parameters that can be used on the Client and Server side.   Following the steps in this guide, you will be able to access the logged in User's information and their set values.   We will teach you how to access session data, that can later be used to provide Users with unique experiences and a more robust application.   You'll learn how to   Create Session Data Access Stored Session Data   NOTE: This guide's content aligns with ThingWorx 9.3. The estimated time to complete this guide is 30 minutes     Step 1: Completed Example   Download the completed files for this tutorial:  Sessions.xml.   The Sessions.xml file contains a completed example of session parameters. Utilize this file to see a finished example and return to it as a reference if you become stuck during this guide. Keep in mind, this download uses the exact names for entities used in this tutorial. If you would like to import this example and also create entities on your own, change the names of the entities you create.     In the bottom-left of Composer, click Import/Export.     Click IMPORT.     In the Import pop-up, keep the default values and click Browse. Navigate to the Sessions.xml file you downloaded. Select it and click Open. Click Import in the Import pop-up. Click Close to close the pop-up.       Step 2: Create Session Parameters  Click the Browse folder on the left-hand side. Under System, select Subsystems.     Filter for UserManagementSubsystem and open it in Edit mode.     Select Services. Filter for the AddSessionShape Service.     Click the Play button to open the Execute window. Enter UserLogin (the provided ThingShape) as the name input field. Click Execute.     Click Done.   You've just created your first Session Parameter. These values are used for content held in a cookie for a website or information that might be static for the User or session.   Best Practice: For information that will be static for the entire application and not based on the session, use a database option or a stored value in a Thing.       Step 3: Access Session Parameters   Click the Browse folder on the left-hand side. Under System, select Resources.   Filter for CurrentSessionInfo and open it.   Select Services. Filter for the GetGlobalSessionValues Service.   Click the Play button to open the Execute window. Click Execute. You will notice the result is a list of the properties in the UserLogin ThingShape. Your result might differ from mine.   Click Done.   NOTE: There is a difference between Session parameters and Mashup parameters. Mashups can have input values that will be used for services or content of that Mashup ONLY. Session parameters are based on the user using the application in a session. This data will be accessible throughout the application and last until they have completed their usage. This guide shows how to create Session parameters that are considered global session parameters.     Step 4: Next Steps   Congratulations!   Step 4: Add Data   We've added a Waterfall Chart Widget to the Mashup, but we still need to bring in backend data.   Ensure the top-right Data tab is active.   Click the green + button.   In the Entity field, search for and select TPWC_Thing. In the Services field, type getprop. Click the right arrow beside GetProperties. On the right, check Execute on Load.   In the bottom-right of the pop-up, click Done.   Under the Data tab on the right, expand GetProperties.   Drag-and-drop Things_TPWC_Thing > GetProperties > InfoTable_Property onto the Waterfall Chart.   On the Select Binding Target pop-up, click Data.     Widget Properties   With the Waterfall Chart bound to data, we now just need to configure a few of the chart's Properties. With the Waterfall Chart selected in the central Canvas area, ensure the Properties tab is active in the bottom-left.   In the Filter field, type xaxis.   In the XAxisField, search for and select month.   In the Filter field, clear the xaxis search and then start a new filter with usetrend.   Check the UseTrendColors box.   At the top, click Save.     Step 5: View Mashup   Up to this point, we've created a Data Shape to format the columns of an Info Table Property. You then created a Thing, as well as an Info Table Property formatted by the Data Shape. As a test, you added some manually-entered data to the Info Table. After creating a Mashup, you added a Waterfall Chart Widget and tied it to that backend data.   The only thing left to do is to visualize your GUI.    Ensure that you're on the Design tab of the TPWC_Mashup.   At the top, click View Mashup. The end result is a visualization of burn up/down as the project is first defined and then implemented.     Step 6: Next Steps   Congratulations!     Step 10: Building and Importing   After you’ve completed your code updates, it’s time to build and import! Below are instructions for building with the framework you have set for the project.   Build Extension with Ant   Go to the Package explorer view. Right click on build-extension.xml. Hover over Run As and select Ant Build.   Your console output will indicate BUILD SUCCESSFUL. This will build your project and create the extension zip in the your_project->build->distributions folder of your project.   Build Extension with Gradle   Right click on your project ->Gradle (STS)->Tasks Quick Launcher.   Set Project from the drop-down menu to your project name and type Tasks as build. Press Enter.   Your console window will display BUILD SUCCESSFUL. Your extension has been created and stored as a zip file in your_project->build->distributions folder.     Import Extension   Go to ThingWorx Composer. In the lower left, click Import/Export, then select Import under.   Select Extension for the type of import.   Choose the zip file in the distributions folder under the build directory. Click Import. Click Close on the prompt to refresh your Composer instance.   After you have imported your new widget and refreshed Composer, you will see your new widget as an option on the Mashup Design tab.     Step 11: Tips   When a new version of an extension contains model changes for one or more of its entities, the previous version of the extension and any entities created from that extension must be deleted before installing the new version of the extension. To avoid having to recreate the entities after the new extension is installed, you can include an extension migrator with the extension that imports the entities created with the previous version.   Adding an Extension Migrator   To create a migrator class for your extensions, follow these steps: Choose the ThingWorx menu and select New Extension Migrator. Select or enter your source folder and package. Enter a name, such as CustomMigrator. Click Finish. The Java source file is created and the configfiles/metadata.xml file is updated automatically.   NOTE: If a migrator has already been created, the previous migrator class name will be replaced in the metadata.xml file with the new migrator class name. The previous migrator Java file will not be changed.   Element Selection   Use this.jqElement to limit your element selections. This will reduce the chance of introducing unwanted behaviors in the application when there might be duplicate IDs and/or classes in the DOM.   ///Don’t do the following: $('.add- btn').click(function(e){...do something...}); ///Do this: this.jqElement.find('.add-btn').click(function(e){ ...do something...});   Logging   We recommend that you use the following methods to log in the Mashup Builder and runtime environment: TW.log.trace(message[,message2,...][,exception]) TW.log.debug(message[,message2,...][,exception]) TW.log.info(message[,message2,...][,exception]) TW.log.warn(message[,message2,...][,exception]) TW.log.error(message[,message2,...][,exception]) TW.log.fatal(message[,message2,...][,exception])   You can view the log messages in the Mashup Builder by opening the log window via the Help->Log menu item; in the Mashup runtime, you can now click on the Show Log button on the top left corner of the page to show log window. If the browser you use supports console.log(), then the messages will also appear in the debugger console.   Formatting   If you have a property with baseType of STYLEDEFINITION, you can get the style information by calling: var formatResult = TW.getStyleFromStyleDefinition( widgetProperties['PropertyName']);   If you have a property of baseType of STATEFORMATTING: var formatResult = TW.getStyleFromStateFormatting({ DataRow: row, StateFormatting: thisWidget.properties['PropertyName'] });   In both cases formatResult is an object with the following defaults: { image: '', backgroundColor: '', foregroundColor: '', fontEmphasisBold: false, fontEmphasisItalic: false, fontEmphasisUnderline: false, displayString: '', lineThickness: 1, lineStyle: 'solid', lineColor: '', secondaryBackgroundColor: '', textSize: 'normal' };     Step 12: Next Steps   Congratulations! In this post, I show how you can downsample time-series data on server side using the LTTB algorithm. The export comes with a service to setup sample data and a mashup which shows the data with weak to strong downsampling.   Motivation: Users displaying time series data on mashups and dashboards (usually by a service using a QueryPropertyHistory-flavor in the background) might request large amounts of data by selecting large date ranges to be visualized, or data being recorded in high resolution. The newer chart widgets in Thingworx can work much better with a higher number of data points to display. Some also provide their own downsampling so only the „necessary“ points are drawn (e.g. no need to paint beyond the screen‘s resolution). See discussion here. However, as this is done in the widgets, this means the data reduction happens on client site, so data is sent over the network only to be discarded. It would be beneficial to reduce the number of points delivered to the client beforehand. This would also improve the behavior of older widgets which don’t have support for downsampling. Many methods for downsampling are available. One option is partitioning the data and averaging out each partition, as described here. A disadvantage is that this creates and displays points which are not in the original data. This approach here uses Largest-Triangle-Three-Buckets (LTTB) for two reasons: resulting data points exist in the original data set and the algorithm preserves the shape of the original curve very well, i.e. outliers are displayed and not averaged out. It also seems computationally not too hard on the server. Setting it up: Import Entities from LTTB_Entities.xml Navigate to thing LTTB.TestThing in project LTTB, run service downsampleSetup to setup some sample data Open mashup LTTB.Sampling_MU: Initially, there are 8000 rows sent back. The chart widget decides how many of them are displayed. You can see the rowcount in the debug info. Using the button bar, you determine to how many points the result will be downsampled and sent to the client. Notice how the curve get rougher, but the shape is preserved. How it works: The potentially large result of QueryPropertyHistory is downsampled by running it through LTTB. The resulting Infotable is sent to the widget (see service LTTB.TestThing.getData). LTTB implementation itself is in service downsampleTimeseries     Debug mode allows you to see how much data is sent over the network, and how much the number decreases proportionally with the downsampling.   LTTB.TestThing.getData;   The export and the widget is done with TWX  9 but it's only the widget that really needs TWX 9. I guess the code would need some more error-checking for robustness, but it's a good starting point.

Basic Mashup Widgets Guide Part 1    Overview   This project will introduce how to use some basic Widgets in a Mashup. Following the steps in this guide, you will create a Mashup that reacts to user input using a Button, Toggle Button, and Slider Widget. We will also teach you how to display data to users with the Grid Advanced, Gauge, and Property Display widgets. NOTE: This guide's content aligns with ThingWorx 9.3. The estimated time to complete ALL 3 parts of this guide is 60 minutes.    Step 1: Create Mashup   Build Mashup Click the Browse folder icon on the top left of ThingWorx Composer. Select Mashups in the left-hand navigation, then click + New to create a new Mashup.        3. For Mashup Type select Responsive. NOTE: A Responsive Mashup scales with a browser’s screen size. In the steps below we will create 5 containers, one for each widget, to organize how the widgets are presented.          4. Click OK. 5. Enter a name for your Mashup. 6. If Project is not already set, click the + in the Project text box and select the PTCDefaultProject. 7. Click Save. 8. Select the Design tab to display Mashup Builder. 9. Select the Layout tab in the upper panel of the left dock. 10. Click Add Bottom to split the Mashup canvas into two halves. 11. Click inside the bottom container to selected it, then click Add Left. 12. Click inside the bottom-right container to select it, then click Add Right. 13. Click inside the top container to select it, then click Add Right again. You should now have 5 containers in two rows, ready to have widgets added.   Step 2: Button   A button allows users to trigger an action, or stop and start long-running processes. Select the Widgets tab in the uppper panel of the left dock, then enter button inside the Filter field in the top-left. Drag-and-drop the Button widget onto the upper left container.        3. Click the drop-down arrow on the left side of the Button widget. 4. Click and drag the Clicked service shown in the drop-down onto a free area of the Mashup canvas.         5. When the Select Service pop-up appears, Click the ResetInputsToDefaultValues service that is provided by the Container. 6. Click Save. 7. Click View Mashup then click Show/Hide Debug Info. 8. Click the Trace tab and click Start Trace. 9. Click the button you created in your Mashup then click Stop Trace to see the log of the Clicked event triggering the ResetInputsToDefaultValues service.   Many properties are available that give control over how a Button widget will be displayed.   Basic Mashup Widgets Guide Part 2    Step 3: Slider   A Slider allows your application users to interactively select a numeric value. When the user changes the position of the slider bar, an event is fired and the value property is changed. On the New Mashup tab, enter slider inside the Filter field in the top left. Drag-and-drop the Slider widget onto the top-right Container of your Mashup. 3. In the lower panel of the left dock, scroll to the Maximum property and change the value to 1000. 4. Change the Value property to 500 set the default position of the slider.   Add Value Display To demonstrate the Slider functionality we will add a Value Display Widget within the same Container of your Mashup as the Slider and bind the slider widget output to the input of the Value Display.         1. In the Filter field where you entered slider, enter value.        2. Drag-and-drop a Value Display widget onto the same upper-right Container as the Slider widget. 3. Click the drop-down arrow on the left side of the Slider widget. 4. Click and drag the Value property listed in the Slider drop-down onto the Value Display widget. 5. Click the Data property that is available from the Select Binding Target pop-up. 6. Click Save to save your Mashup. 7. Drag-and-drop a Value Display Widget onto the same lower left container of the Mashup where the Toggle Button was placed. Click the drop-down arrow on the left side of the Toggle Button Widget. Click and drag the State property listed in the drop-down onto the Value Display Widget and a Select Binding Target pop-up will appear.  Click the Data property that is available from the Value Display Widget. Click Save to save your Mashup so it can be tested. Click View Mashup then click the Toggle Button to see the value of the button shown in the Value Display Widget.   Other properties are available to provide control over how a Toggle Button Widget will be displayed.   How to Display Data in Charts Guide Part 2   Step 4: Create Thing   In order for the Mashup to pull data into the display, you first need to create an Entity. In this example, we utilize a Thing with an Info Table Property, as well as a Time Series Property. We’ll use the DataShape we created in the last step to format the Info Table Property. Then, we'll assign the Info Table Property some default values to display in our non-time-series charts.We will change the values of the Time Series Property (which will record them to the Value Stream) for display in our time-series charts.   Info Table Property   From the Browse tab of ThingWorx Composer, click Modeling > Things, + New.   In the Name field, enter DDCThing. If Project is not set, search for and select PTCDefaultProject. In the Base Thing Template field, search for and select GenericThing. In the Value Stream field, search for and select DDCValueStream.   At the top, click Properties and Alerts.   Click + Add. In the Name field, enter InfoTableProperty. Select INFOTABLE from the Base Type drop-down. In the Data Shape field, search for and select DDCDataShape. Check the Persistent checkbox.   First Default Value   Check the box for Has Default Value. A new DDCDataShape button will appear under Has Default Value. 2. Click the new DDCDataShape button under Has Default Value. 3. Click + Add. 4. Enter the following values for each field: Field Value PrimaryKey 1 Label A - 25% Value 25 XAxis 1 Data 5 ASensor 5 BSensor 3 CSensor 1 XValue 1 YValue 5 BubbleValue 7     3. At the bottom-right of the pop-up, click the green Add button to apply the first Default Values.   Second Default Value   Click + Add. Enter the following values for each field: Field Value PrimaryKey 2 Label B - 35% Value 35 XAxis 2 Data 10 ASensor 10 BSensor 6 CSensor 2 XValue 2 YValue 10 BubbleValue 9   3. At the bottom-right of the pop-up, click the green Add button to apply the second Default Values.   Third Default Value   Click + Add. Enter the following values for each field: Field Value PrimaryKey 3 Label C - 40% Value 40 XAxis 3 Data 20 ASensor 15 BSensor 9 CSensor 3 XValue 3 YValue 20 BubbleValue 14     3. At the bottom-right of the pop-up, click the green Add button to apply the third Default Values. 4. At the bottom-right of the pop-up, click the green Save button to close the pop-up.   Time Series Property   At the top-right, click the "Check with a +" button for Done and Add. In the Name field, enter TimeSeriesProperty. Change the Base Type to NUMBER. Check the Persistent checkbox. Checking this box causes the last Value entered into the Property to persist through reboots of the system. Check the Logged box. Checking this box causes all changes to the Property to be logged if you have a Value Stream defined to record the changes. 6. At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done.   7. At the top, click Save.   If the DDCThing's TimeSeriesProperty changes from this point onward, it will now be recorded in the DDCValueStream. Normally, any changes would come from an Edge IoT sensor of some type, but for the purposes of this guide, we will manually change the value repeatedly to simulate these types of changes.   Set 5   Under TimeSeriesProperty's Value column, click the "pencil" button for Set value of property.   In the slide-out at the top-right, enter 5.   At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done.   Set 10   Under TimeSeriesProperty's Value column, click the "pencil" button for Set value of property. In the slide-out at the top-right, enter 10.   At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done.   Set 15   Under TimeSeriesProperty's Value column, click the "pencil" button for Set value of property. In the slide-out at the top-right, enter 15.   At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done. Set 20   Under TimeSeriesProperty's Value column, click the "pencil" button for Set value of property. In the slide-out at the top-right, enter 20.   At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done. Set 25   Under TimeSeriesProperty's Value column, click the "pencil" button for Set value of property. In the slide-out at the top-right, enter 25.   At the top-right, click the "Check" button for Done. At the top, click Save.   Step 5: Create Mashup   Before we can bind the data to the various Chart Widgets, we first have to create a Mashup and add the charts to it. From the Browse tab of ThingWorx Composer, click Visualization > Mashups, + New.   Keep the default of Responsive, and click OK.   In the Name field, enter DDCMashup.   If Project is not set, search for and select PTCDefaultProject. At the top, click Save.   At the top, click Design.   Divide the Mashup   On the top-left under the Layout section, click two times on Add Left.   With the left-third selected in the central Canvas window, click Add Bottom.   With the middle-third selected in the central Canvas window, click Add Bottom. With the right-third selected in the central Canvas window, click Add Bottom.   At the top, click Save. Add the Charts   At the top-left, click on the Widgets tab.   Search for pie inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. Drag-and-drop a Pie Chart Widget onto the top-left section of the Canvas.   In the top-left, change Category to Legacy, and search for label chart inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. Drag-and-drop a Label Chart Widget onto the top-middle section of the Canvas. Note that, even the Label Chart is a Legacy Widget, it will still work. 6. Change Category back to Standard, and search for proportional inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. 7. Drag-and-drop a Proportional Chart Widget onto the top-right section of the Canvas. 8. Search for bubble inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. 9. Drag-and-drop a Bubble Chart Widget onto the bottom-left section of the Canvas. 10. Search for line inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. 11. Drag-and-drop a Line Chart Widget onto the bottom-middle section of the Canvas.   12. Search for event inside the Filter Widgets field in the top-left. 13. Create Your Application Guide UI Part 1    Overview   This project will introduce the ThingWorx Mashup Builder. Following the steps in this guide, you will learn how to use this tool to create a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for your IoT Application. We will teach you how to rapidly create and update a Mashup, which is a custom visualization built to display data from devices according to your application's business and technical requirements. NOTE: This guide's content aligns with ThingWorx 9.3. The estimated time to complete ALL 5 parts of this guide is 30 minutes.    Step 1: Create New Mashup   The Mashup Builder is a drag-and-drop environment with a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface. With the Mashup Builder you can quickly and easily create a visualization of your IoT data. In this step, we'll explain various options to customize your application GUI. Click Browse > VISUALIZATION > Mashups.   Click + New. You are now on the New Mashup pop-up window.           Layout Options When creating your UI, you must choose whether you want a Responsive, Static, or Responsive (Advanced) Mashup, depending on the resolutions of the displays you want your application users to utilize when running your application. Mashup Layout Description When to Use Responsive Expands to the resolution of the display in an even more dynamic manner than the Responsive (Legacy) option. Previously-labeled as Responsive (Advanced), this is now the default option with modifications to the Mashup Builder interface versus previous versions. For instance, divisions such as a header or footer are available with the Template options at the bottom of the pop-up. Static (Legacy) Sized to the dimensions that you define. Static Mashups are appropriate when your users have a standard device on which they’ll be utilizing your application, such as a smartphone or tablet. When displayed in a lower resolution you will see scroll bars, in a higher resolution there will be unused space around the Mashup. Responsive (Legacy) Expands to the resolution of the display without leaving any unused space around the Mashup. Responsive Mashups should be utilized when you anticipate that users will interface with your application through various-sized screens. Responsive Mashups should always be tested at various resolutions to ensure optimum display of your IoT data.   Keep the default of Responsive (with NO Responsive Templates chosen), and click OK in the pop-up window. In the Name field, enter appui_mashup.   If the Project is not already set, search for and select PTCDefaultProject.  At the top, click Save.   At the top, click Design. This is the Mashup Builder user interface we will use for the remainder of this guide.              6. On the left, click the "left arrow" Collapse icon to cause the Composer Navigation to slide-out, revealing more room for the Mashup Builder interface.         Step 2: Mashup Builder Sections Now that you've launched the Mashup Builder, you'll need an understanding of the layout and configuration options.     NOTE: Section 1 in the top-left has a drop-down arrow you can click to reveal additional sections if your screen resolution is too small to show all of Widgets, Layout, and Explorer. There is also the Mashups tab in Section 1, but it is not covered in this guide.   Mashup Builder Section Description 1a Widgets Widgets provides a list of every graphical element within the platform. There are a wide variety of selections, from grids to graphs to text boxes to buttons. There is also a Filter Widgets field where you can enter the name of a particular Widget to sort the list. 1b Layout Layout is used to divide your Mashup into logical sub-sections. 1c Explorer Explorer allows you to reach any individual element of a Mashup. This can be helpful when multiple Widgets are overload on top of each other in the central Canvas window, making it difficult to click on them individually. 2 Canvas This is an area into which you can drag-and-drop Widgets to your desired location to build your application UI. You can also drag-and-drop data onto the Widgets in the Canvas. 3a Data Data is fundamental to any Mashup that wants to display ThingWorx IoT data, as it allows you to bind backend-data to particular Widgets. 3b Session Session provides access to Session Parameters, which are similar to global variables that may be used across multiple Mashups, such as cookies or security information for a logged-in User. 3c User User provides access to the User Extensions. User Extensions are the Properties of the logged-in User and can be used on the Client side and/or the Server side. 4a Properties Properties displays the Properties for the selected Mashup or Widget. These Properties allow you to perform a variety of modifications to Widgets, such as setting its exact position. 4b Style Properties Style Properties are a sub-set of Properties dealing with items such as changing color. 5a Bindings As data connections are made to various Widgets, the Bindings window will show these links in an easy-to-understand 'arrow' format. For instance, if a button press causes a Thing’s Service to be called, then you’ll see a connection from the Button Widget’s *Clicked* Event over to the Thing’s Service. 5b Reminders Reminders points out issues with your Mashup, such as unbound but required Properties, which often must be fixed before the Mashup can be saved. 6a Data Properties Data Properties displays properties of the selected data element. This can be helpful, for instance, when you want something to be triggered only when something else has completed. In that scenario, you’d look for the ServiceInvokeCompleted Event in this bottom-right area. 6b Functions Functions provides the ability to write custom business logic within the Mashup itself.   Step 3: Introducing Widgets   The primary way in which you'll create the GUI for your IoT application is with Widgets. Widgets are self-contained graphical elements that you can drag-and-drop onto the central Canvas area. Once placed on the Canvas, you can: Modify Widget layout Resize Widgets Bind Data to Widgets Combining several Widgets together will allow you to quickly and easily create a functional GUI for your IoT application. Widget Name Widget Example Picture Description Button   The Button Widget triggers an Event when it is clicked. Typically, this Event will be used to trigger a Service to either push or pull data from the platform’s backend. Checkbox   The Checkbox Widget provides a simple box which can be either set or not-set. You primarily use a Checkbox when you’re setting or displaying Boolean data. Gauge   The Gauge Widget provides a more “graphically interesting” way to display a numerical value. You can set the minimum and maximum values which a Gauge displays, or style a Gauge so that different areas are different colors. Label   The Label Widget displays a non-user-interactable string within your Mashup. You can use this to create headings or descriptions for parts of your Mashup. Text Field   The Text Field Widget is a small, one-line area into which you can either accept an input string from the User or display a string from the platform’s backend. Combining a few of the basic Widgets described above allows you to create a Mashup for your IoT application. However, without data being supplied to these Widgets from the platform's backend, they're just pretty graphics. In the next section, we will introduce a few of the Mashup Services that enable bidirectional data flow between your GUI and device data.   Click here to view Part 2 of this guide.

  Create Your Application Guide UI Part 4    Step 6: Apply Services   You now have an idea of what your Mashup will look like, but without Data Services, it won't accomplish anything productive. In the following steps you'll apply Mashup Data Services to the Widgets.   Add Data Services   Click the + button in the top-right in the Data tab.   In the Entity Filter field, search for and select MBQSThing. In the Select Services field, search for and select GetPropertyValues. Check the Execute on Load checkbox for GetPropertyValues. In the Services Filter field, search for and select SetProperties. In this case, you WILL NOT check the box for Mashup Loaded? because we do not want to call this Service upon initial Mashup load. 6. Click Done. Both the GetPropertyValues and SetProperties Services now appears under the Data tab as well. 7. Click Save.   GetPropertyValues   GetPropertyValues has brought all the values of our Thing's Properties into the Mashup. Now let's tie these values to the Widgets. Expand All Data under the GetPropertyValues Service on the right under the Data tab.   Drag-and-drop Gears_Count onto the textfield-gears-count Widget.   On the Select Binding Target pop-up, click Text.   Repeat Steps 2 and 3, binding Pistons_Count to textfield-pistons-count and Wheels_Count to textfield-wheels-count. Drag-and-drop Gears_Count_Manually_Set onto the checkbox-gears-manual Widget.   On the Select Binding Target pop-up, click State.   Repeat Steps 5 and 6, binding Pistons_Count_Manually_Set to checkbox-pistons-manual and Wheels_Count_Manually_Set to checkbox-wheels-manual. Click Save.   SetProperties   We want to tie the Widgets to the SetProperties Service to manually set the inventory counts in case something has gone wrong with our IoT sensors in the warehouse. On the right under the Data tab, minimize the GetPropertyValues Service and expand the SetProperties Service.        2. Click the textfield-gears-count Widget to select it. 3. Click the top-left drop-down of the TextBox to expand the options. 4. Drag-and-drop Text onto SetProperties > Gears_Count. 5. Repeat Steps 2 through 4, binding Text from textfield-pistons-count onto Pistons_Count and textfield-wheels-count onto Wheels_Count. 6. Click the checkbox-gears-manual Widget to select it. 7. Click the top-left drop-down of the Checkbox to expand the options. 8. Drag-and-drop State onto Gears_Count_Manually_Set. 9. Repeat Steps 6 through 8, binding State from both checkbox-pistons-manual to Pistons_Count_Manually_Set and checkbox-wheels-manual to Wheels_Count_Manually_Set. 10. Click the button-manual-set Widget to select it. 11. Click the top-left drop-down of the Button to expand the options. 12. Drag-and-drop the Clicked Event onto SetProperties under the Data tab. NOTE: The previous steps in this section where we bound Widgets to Properties simply defined what-goes-where in terms of storing the values into the ThingWorx Foundation backend.To actually push those values, the SetProperties Service itself must be called. 13. With the SetProperties Service selected, drag-and-drop SetProperties' ServiceInvokeCompleted Event (in the bottom-right Data Properties section) onto the GetPropertyValues Service (in the top-right Data tab). If you don't see ServiceInvokeCompleted, ensure that you have the Data Properties tab selected. This will cause the GUI to update once the new values have been saved to the platform’s backend. 14. Click Save.   Manual Data Retrieval   We want to tie a Button to GetPropertyValues to update the GUI with the backend's ever-changing inventory counts without requiring a page reload. Click button-manual-retrieve to select it. Click the top-left drop-down of this Button Widget to expand the options. Drag-and-drop the Clicked Event onto the GetPropertyValues Service. This will create another way to update the part counts in the GUI, other than reloading the page. 4. Click Save.   Click here to view Part 5 of this guide.

This might be a well-known topic for some, but I recently had a need that Event Routers fit into perfectly and wanted to share. If you have some neat applications for Event Routers on mashups, feel free to reply!   What? Event Routers are a function on Mashups that let you connect multiple inputs to a single output. For my use case, this was extremely helpful to let me have two different Service Outputs go to the same Widget. They are a really simple tool that can save a lot of headache.   How? Event Routers work by funneling the latest data through to a single output. This is particularly useful for  user-activated actions with the output tied to a widget or another service. The Event Router automatically activates when any one of the Inputs changes.   Example I have two services that generate HTML from different sources, but I want to display just the latest one that the user had activated in a single HTML Text Area widget. The two different services are activated with two different buttons. But how do I show these two outputs in a single widget? Create an Event Router with two HTML inputs!         Now I just tie each service output to the Inputs and tie the Output to the HTML Text Area Text (note: the icon for Input2 is incorrect—it should be HTML as well; this system is running 8.5.1, perhaps it's an issue in that release).         Now when the user clicks on either button, the correct service’s HTML is sent to the HTML Text Area. Ta-da!   P.S. I noticed in some older posts that Event Routers used to be a widget or extension that came and went. Now (8.5+) it is baked into the Functions on the far right side of Mashup Builder.

Q: With flex containers, is it still possible to create a mashup with two columns, one covering 1/3 of the screen, the other 2/3 of the screen, when the size of the screen is not known upfront? A: Correct - you can set container rules to grow and shrink (in your case, set one container to use 1/3rd and the other 2/3rd) Q: Do we have the cut/paste function in the responsive containers so we're able to move content around? A: Yes, now you can move the whole container too! You can either use the cut/ copy/ paste from the toolbar, or use keyboard shortcuts (shift for cut/ move and alt for copy). Q: The old layout widget allowed setting column size as percentage, rather than absolute size. How can that be done in containers? A: With containers, it uses the standard flex-grow and flex-shrink css properties. We have Grow Ratio and Shrink Ratio properties available, and you can set the values there. Q: How are we addressing the expand/collapse functions we used to have in the headers/footers/righ&left side bar? A: Each container  will have an option to Expand/ Collapse. Based on where the container is located (left/ right or top/ bottom), it will expand accordingly - so left/ right sidebar or header/ footer. Q: Does it show which widgets are undergoing the changes from legacy to new? A: The legacy widgets are grouped in the 'Legacy' widget category, and are indicated with an icon noting it's a legacy widget. Q: What about migrating from widget from extension (ie advanced grid) ? Those will be replaced also? A: Correct - when you move to 8.5, you won't have to import the extension any longer. If you have any Mashups with the Advanced Grid in place, it'll pick it up. Q: Can we add CSS to the themes? A: Yes, you can add. The Custom CSS tab is available for Themes specifically too. Q: Bindings of containers won't be saved - does that mean that if we use contained mashup with mashup parameters, all bindings will be lost? A: The bindings within the container should not change; the Mashup parameters will be exposed so that you can bind in/ out. The bindings should be retained - when you migrate from the old layout to the new, any bindings you have should not be lost/ broken.

Hi everyone,   Maybe you got my email, I just wanted to post this also here.   I built a CSS generator for a few widgets, 8 at the moment. This is on a cloud instance accessible by anyone.   Advantages:      - don't have to style buttons and apply style definitions over and over again      - greater flexibility in styling the widget      - you don't have to write any CSS code   The way this works: you use the configurator to style the widget as you want. Use also a class to define what that widget is, or how it's styled. For example "primary-btn", "secondary-btn", etc. Copy the generated CSS code into the CustomCSS tab in ThingWorx and on the widget, put the CustomClass specified in the configurator.   As a best practice, I'd recommend placing all your CSS code into the Master mashup. And then all your mashups that use that master will also get the CustomCSS. So the only thing you have to do to your widgets in the mashups, is fill the CustomClass property with the desired generated style. Also, comment your differently styled widgets by separating them with /* My red button */ for example.   The mashups for this won't be released, this will only be offered as a service. Question: Is there a Security log entry added when a user is refused access to Composer? Answer:The Security log is mainly for user login and authentication items; since this is not authentication per se, we don't log any messages there. The Application log should have log entries noting any errors. Question:  Do the gauges and graphs now behave more reactive without reloads of massive data. just easy show "realtime" data? Answer: The Custom Charts we have on the Market place should alleviate some of that - depending on how the data refresh is set up, that should redraw. The changes we have done on the layout side won't have any impacts there, unless the browser window is resized. Question:Will we offer a library of "Design themes"?  Answer:We are working on adding prebuilt themes for a future release. Question: Does the new Mashup builder store Mashups in the same way? Are these new Mashups taking into account a runtime separated from the platform? Answer: It should be the same - the runtime instance is still separated. Question:What about inheritance with themes? Answer: The support inheritance - if you have a Contained Mashup without a Theme set, they should be inheriting the parent's Theme. Question: Is it posible to duplicate an expression / validator? are there plans to include the event router there? Answer: We don't have duplication support in the current release . Yes, we have plans to add more 'non-visual' widgets to the list, that includes Event Router and Status Message. Question: Is it planned to generate the preview images dynamically based on mashup contents? Answer: We are looking into dynamic updates for images - it might get expensive to generate images based on the volume of data that is bound to the widgets, so we're exploring different ways to resolve this. Question: Will these new BETA widgets be forward compatible? Answer:Correct, and we are working on adding more widgets! The property definitions within them shouldn't undergo any changes (as in properties won't get removed). We're always looking to enhance these further, so they might get additional features/ properties. Question: Any guide available for custom widget development? Answer: We are working on adding development guides for Web Components, and working with the respective SDKs.
