Assembly instances

I want to create a generic drill assembly with either a 3/8" or 1/2" Jacobs chuick. The chucks are individual models, no generic. I know I can create a generic drill assembly by assembling both chucks then toggle one or the other. Is this theprefered method or is there a better way to do this? Maybe with Pro Program?
