What to do next after installing Pro/E

Is there any documentation about what to do next after software
installation? OOTB Pro/E install doesn't get you very far. There are
so many different things to customize. Surely there's a structured
guide to lead a newbie through the forest.

Topics would include:
* Creating / setting up a system config.pro
* Implications of a config.sup
* Whether or not to use the start-menu shortcuts
* Whether or not to use a custom start-in folders
* Establishing start models / drawing templates
* Creating drawing formats
* Line weights / colors / pen table mappings
* Drawing fonts
* System directories (library, group, crosshatch, colormap,
templates)
* Temporary files locations

Preface : It's Friday.

Pro/e is just like buying a car. You don't need any instructions, just jump
in and drive. No, no, read the manual first there are lots of questions a
newbie might have.

Topics include:

Oh when should I put gas in?

Is there air in the tires?

What is windshield washer fluid?

And the list can go on.

Sadly this book does not exist in any known universe I have ever visited.

Ron Rich

Well, there was one, at one time. I think the last set was for the last
pre-WF release, or maybe one or two before that. Hence, there were often
replies to questions here that simply said, "RTFM."

Remember those days? I so miss printed manuals...

Being that I work for a printing company, I miss the printed manuals too. Curses to the I-Pad and other similar such electronic nonsense.

I referred to the rev 18 manuals all the way up until the first WF release.
After that, they were mostly useless.

Those topics are covered in training classes.
Your company invested in Wildfire, now they need to invest in their employees who will use Wildfire by having them trained.

Training is an investment, not an expense!

These days it is "Google it!"

The problem with training is that if you send 6 people, you will have 6
different ways to set up Pro-E.

I believe that there used to be an 'Administrators' training session
back in the day, (rev 19) but it doesn't seem to be offered now.

Maybe PTC University has something to offer?

I would NEVER send 6 people to the admin class!
Assign that to 1, maybe 2 people and that is all that get training in system admin.
Train the others in the use of the software so they become productive in a few weeks instead of a few months.

When a former company changed from another CAD system to Wildfire after 18 years on the old one, we had EVERY designer go through 10 days of training plus 2 days Intralink training. Some of the designers had 5 additional days in specialized topics.

A friend of mine is looking for suggestions or a syscol file that has been
helpful for people with Red/Green color blindness.

If you have a syscol file that you know to be helpful can you please forward
it.

If new users are looking for a quick over view of all the admin things they ought to know to set up a system, I suggest they look at my talk from PTCUser 2010. Although it doesn't cover everything an admin ought to know, it covers most of it. There are 71 pages to the Powerpoint, plus the notes pages for the slides contain more information. Included in the zip are some useful files. There are a few movie files to download also. Down load all the files and unzip them in the same directory so Powerpoint can find them. You need to view the presentation as a slide show. If you print it out to read, you will have a lot of graphics overlapping the text.

I put a lot of work into this presentation, and I received a best presenter award for it.

ProE Admin 101

I agree, my point was regarding the general PTC classes that I see
offered. Most classes I have been to have a mixture of modeling
techniques, setup techniques, and some config techniques thrown in.

As I said before, send 6 people to a class (say advanced surfacing) and
you will get 6 different ideas about how to implement the features and
setup the CAD system.
