Can you inherit mates from assembly CAD files?

We have run across multiple assembly files that have specific mate functions established in the assembly, that show how the assembly should move. When we import the file into Creo Illustrate, it appears all of those mates are removed/broken. For a simple (and non-proprietary) example, we can reference this destaco clamp animation: Destaco Clamp Animation (youtube.com)

In this assembly, the movement of the plunger is controlled through the linkages that connect back to the handle. All of these mates can be established in the native CAD file. But when we import the file into Creo Illustrate, we cannot easily recreate this movement, especially for more complex assemblies with hundreds of parts and hundreds of mates.

Is it possible to keep these mates from the native CAD file? Am I importing the assembly wrong into Creo Illustrate?
