Watermarks only on print outs

Hello,

We are on a project and there is a customer requirement about watermarks on printed pdf files.

Is it possible to have print outs with watermarks of a pdf document? The electronic form of pdf should not contain any watermarks.

Is there a setting on Publish Engine or dita files regarding this requirement.

Thanks,

Andac

Try setting the environment variable APTWATERMARKTEXT to the string that you wish to display.

in your ditamap insert a content status, then change the required content field to say what you want it to say. When publishing final copy delete the content status element

DId APTWATERMARKTEXT assist you or did using content status assist you?

Hello Phelps,

I've tried setting that variable on the machine that i create .dita and .ditamap files but did not work. The publish engine does not put watermarks on PDF's maybe some other setting is needed, or i should have restarted the computer after setting that variable.

Anyway, we manage watermarks via stylesheet now. We have not find such function that put watermarks only on printed documents yet.

Thank you for your replies.

Are you looking for a watermark that does not show on the screen when viewing the PDF but does appear on the paper print?

Is there software you use that does this function?

Hello David,

I sow pdf document samples that use this function. I think some professional pdf openers have similar functions.

Thanks for your reply.

This looks like a promising avenue if PTC wanted to add this ability to their outputs:

To do what is needed, the file needs what's called an Optional Content Group (OCG) and a piece of embedded software to change the display of that OCG.

You may run into a problem for legal documents. Those are typically required to have no active elements in them, such as JavaScript, so this method would not be allowed. See http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=PDF/A

If you are looking as David suggests a PDF that will display in a watermark in print and no watermark in electronic viewing, then that is not supported and it is not clear that PDFs support such functionality.
