potential Publishing Engine Flexera (6.0 and above) licensing gotcha: floating vs. locked licenses

Actually, Publishing Engine has always been sold by PTC (and Arbortext) as a floating or concurrent license. The issue you have run into is a flaw in the old licensing tool which allowed customers to use floating licenses without a license server in place. Now, if PE licenses were sold as locked then I would agree, this is a new problem. With Flexera for licensing we are offering enhanced security of your license entitlements, Flexera also offers many other benefits.

And, as you mention, if there is a valid requirement on why a customer cannot use the entitlement as floating/concurrent (this applies to all Arbortext Products), Regional License Management teams can temporarily lock a floating license in a matter of minutes. This temporarily locked license will persist until the customer contacts License Management and requests a change.

I just ran into a hiccup installing / configuring a Publishing Engine 6.0
m010 server. Apparently one or more of our PE licenses is/are floating
licenses which require a license server to host them. Apparently a phone
call with licensing (too late today) on Monday is all it will take to
convert the licenses from floating to fixed. (Support was a little confused
regarding why they would be floating ... and, in fact, I *think* some are,
some aren't.)

This came as a surprise to me because in the < 6.0 world, we have always
installed our PE licenses as fixed ... directly on each server. (We are
running a license server for our floating Print Composer licenses but have
not used it for anything else.)

I *could* install a license server for the 6.0+ world however it is not how
we want or intend to run (why add a moving part?) so I am hoping to avoid it
... especially as I go into our vulnerability assessment.

FWIW: It took 13 minutes for the Flexera licenses to generate and arrive in
e-mail.
