Autonumber sequence number skips

We are seeing major skips in our Auto numbering sequence. For example
we have a total of 2500 CN's but our CN number is up to CN0010750.
Where are our numbers going........

It is my understanding, that all objects in Windchill uses the same
autonumbering method, so I guess the "missing" numbers are spread out on
all sorts of objects using autonumbering, like Promotion Requests, Managed
Baselines, ...
