Is it possible to determine or measure travel distance of component 1 moving from a fixed component

Pro Gurus:

Is there a way to determine or measure the distance when component 1 moved
linearly away from component 2 until it start hitting component 3 (a
revolved elliptical shell)?

Any advice and input is greatly appreciated.
