API Toolkit Solidworks PDM Integration

Hello, we're looking into integrating with Soldiworks PDM and was told we need the API Toolkit. Searching around I found different versions ranging from free to paid and in different languages. Has anyone gone through an integration like this and know if the free version of the Toolkit is suitable or do we need to purchase.
