Machine-Designers: Brass nuts on steel bolt/rod? What's the rationale?

I've frequently seen old table saws, radial arm saws, and other equipment which have brass nuts on their (presumably not-stainless) steel arbor shafts.  Besides reduced likelihood of galling, are there other reasons brass might be spec'd?  Preventing wear on arbor?
