Thanks for all the responses but these two replies solved the problems.
Thanks to G.Bon for solving the crash problem.
_____
I created a font directory in the root of our PTC install directory, copied the few fonts that we use into it and set config.pro option pro_font_dir to point at this directory; problem resolved.
From: G. Bon
I can't remember exactly but I had a similar problem in WF2.
The problem was coming from font directory.
When you double-click in a cell, ProE load fonts list and that cause the crash.
This was solved when setting proE font directory in different location that Windows\fonts.
Hope this help,
GB

Thanks to Bernie: I knew this setting to turn off "show window while dragging" was in Windows somewhere but they have hidden it so well in Win7 that despite looking for it there is no way I would have found it without Bernie's directions!

I do not have a specific suggestion for your WF2 Drafting issues (Its been years since I was on WF2), but maybe your problems are all related because of the old software with a newer OS.
I seem to remember back in the WF4 days that there was an option for "Show Window Contents While Dragging" that needs to be turned off. You can find this in -Control Panel - System - Advanced System Setting - Performance - Settings.
Find the option and uncheck the box.
While your there, you may want to just turn off all the "Eyecandy" and see what happens. Hit the button for "Adjust for best performance"

I hope these crashes cannot be resolved in WF2..so that you are forced to upgrade to Creo2 immediately.
I call people "lazy" or "adamant to change" when they are in too old technology..
Sorry for my wording..but I want to encourage to upgrade today..instead of trying to resolve issues in WF2
My comment here is : I own and have run a successful tool and die making business for 23 years and we have been on ProE since release 18. WF2 is still a rock solid software tool that has facilitated the company to provide world class tooling and remain competetive in a fast changing global economic environment. Advice hoping we cannot resolve the issue can only be given by an employee whose primary objective is not necessarily the success of the company that employs them.
We will make the transition to Creo and are looking forward to the benefits it will bring. However in the light of the threads on this and other forums about the reliability of Creo 2 at this point in time, I would prefer that we will choose when to switch, confident that it won't disable our productivity and damage our business.
To all the other members of this forum, thanks for your help; to have access to your knowledge and to be part of a community that is continually willing to help each other is a rare priviledge.
