Text editor recommendations

We have used Crimson editor for years. Our users enjoy a few things
about it, chiefly the colored syntax. Line numbers are nice, and the
column editing feature can be very useful at times. This is an open
source freebie buts its aging. Our parts are very parameteric and we
write a lot of relations and Pro/Program.
Anyone have recommendations on a newer free (open source) editor that
has colored sytax abilities?

Also gives you the ability to wirte very powerful macros.

You can also do comparison in Notpad++ there is a free plugin. Works great.

Another vote for Notepad++ especially because it is free, customizable,
and it understands many syntaxes including G-code, XML, etc...

I haven't found the perfect editor for all purposes yet, but there are
a few very good ones out there. Which one you prefer probably depends on
how you use it. For example, I need to look into and edit huge files
every so often, but most people won't have a need for that. So here are
some editors I use, and their pro's and con's:

PSPad
