Creating side menu on iphone with notch/safe area inset.

When I try to create a side menu (or display any images or items at the edge of the screen) it displays correctly on ipad but on iphones with a notch it has a ~5% gap on both right and left sides when in horizontal mode. Is there any way to put content in that safe area? Manually moving the position to -5% just cuts off of the image.
