Ability to manage a "Trial BOM" in Windchill and send to ERP

Use Case:

Here is the high level requirement :

It must be possible to manage a trial BOM that supports the scenario to produce a limited number of end products with the same Part Number (SKU) as the Production BOM(EBOM and MBOM)

The same Trial BOM could be made as Main Stream Production BOM as per the business needs or left as a Trial production only

There could be more then one Trial BOMs that need to run in Parallel and they will be merged through formal process

The Production BOM(EBOM and MBOM) should not be impacted by Trial BOM

The Trial BOM(s) should be able to sent to SAP where there is a placeholder(s) for the Trial ERP BOM.

I'd really like to hear how others manage this.

The only way I can think of is for the Trial BOM (and all new trial parts) to have a different part numbers than the existing Production parts. That should help ensure inventories aren't mixed.

After Trial parts are validated, you would then have to merge those changes into the Production BOM.

Are there better ways?
