Adding Collectors to the OOTB Collector

Hi All,
I was pointed to a series of XML files that are used to configure the OOTB Windchill collector UI. However, the XML files are quite complex and I believe that the UML model is required to make any changes or to make new collectors. Has anyone ever modified these XML files to create their own collectors?
