Difference between EPMMemberLink, EPMReferenceLink and EPMVariantLink

Hi,

 

Can anyone tell the difference between EPMMemberLink, EPMReferenceLink and EPMVariantLink? As in Windchill all the 3 links have same RoleAType and RoleBType. i.e. wt.epm.EPMDocument and wt.epm.EPMDocumentMaster, so how to know, which link should get created at which time?
