How do I tie the group to the approver role...as mentioned above?

Go to Preference management on a site level, go to - Promotion Process ->Fixed Roles For Promote set this preference..

CONTEXT ROLE = WORKFLOW ROLE - both roles can be same

The preference is currently set to:

APPROVER=PROMOTION APPROVERS | REVIEWER=PROMOTION REVIEWERS

So the Promotion Approvers are automatically preselected from context team also Promotion Reviewers.
