Windchill 12.1.0.x

Windchill 12.1.0.x

Why does Windchill 12.1.0.x have such a short support life? 12.1.0.5 is scheduled for release on Aug 17 yet all 12.1.0.x have an end of support date of Sep 30, 2022.

Is it even worth considering this release if we are upgrading from 11.0 or 11.1?

Even 12.1.1 only has a 9 month support.

It looks like 12.0.2.5 or .6 will be the best upgrade path for now with 12.1.2.x sometime in 2023 or early  2024, unless Windchill 12.2.x or Windchill 13 comes out in 2023.

@BenLoosli we have had a common pattern since Windchill 11.1 where the Long Term support release is the last release of the series.  The earlier releases allow one to start to investigate, test and plan against new features with the final release on the stream being the long term release.

Here is a shot from the Product Release calendar where I have highlighted the long term release (note 11.2.1 was a bit of an outcast due to Oracle's change on Java 8 support)

It’s normal for cutting edge software to have shorter life than established product, it’s one of the costs of being an early adopter, along with the risk of discovering a flaw.

But that is very short and I yeah it would hardly seem worth it. 12.0.2.x looks like the best option today.

With 11.1 at least there’s still 8 months left to decide.

I got my 12.0.1.4 system installed on Wednesday with 11.2.1 WindchillDS for testing.

Downloaded 12.0.1 CPS5 this morning.

Will be using the 12.0.1.4 system for upgrade testing and possibly AD connection testing.

I don't anticipate doing a production 12.x system until later this year, depending on engineering drawing release schedules.

I may do an upgrade test from the data we have in an 11.0 M030 system to see if that will work. If it does, I may take my other 11.0 system directly to 12.0.1.x. The production system on 11.0 has 2.5 million files (190GB) in the vaults and the Oracle backups are close to 14GB daily.
