Question

New behaviour when replying while not logged in

In the last weeks/months a couple of nice and useful changes were made to the forum but not all are an improvement. Just think of the too small edit window. I noticed that its larger now when I start to place an answer but still quite small and when I later edit my post its of low height again ( at least most of the times).

But another annoyance is when I try to reply to a post but am not logged in (which is the standard situation for me as I usually only log in when am about to answer a question). Before the changes which were done in the last weeks, when pressing the "reply" button I was sent to the PTC support login page and after having logged in I automatically found myself right in the reply edit window and could immediately start typing.

At the time now, two things may happen:

Either

1) I get an error message and have to reload the page and login in after that ...

or

2) I am sent to the login page as before, but after having logging in I find myself at the top of the thread I was coming from. So I have to scroll down to the post I want reply to (even more annoying if its a post in the midst of the thread and so harder to find) and then press the reply button once again!

I would really appreciate it if the original behavior could be set again.

I guess the too small initial size of the editing window as well as the just reported behaviour are the results of switching from the new editing window to the inplace editing mode . And I wonder if it was a good idea to do so as I don't see any advantages that would outweigh the disadvantages mentioned.

Hi @Werner_E, as you mentioned at the end of your post these things are the result of the new inline replies. This was one part of a larger package when upgrading to a newer forum version, so undoing that is not something we plan to do. However, we were able to increase the default size of the editor to match it's original size, and we may have a solution to what you are experiencing when you try to reply while logged out.

There is a setting we can change for the community that would allow you to write your reply while logged out and redirect you to log in after you submit the reply. That way you won't have to scroll down and find the message you were replying to again. Your reply will already be written and will be posted when you log in. There is a caveat though. If you are writing your reply while logged out you won't have the benefit of drafts being auto-saved, and we are worried some users who depend on that feature may accidently lose their work. So, this is something we are still considering and haven't made a decision on yet.

We would be interested in feedback on this. Is the auto-save feature something you rely on? And would logging in after you write your reply be a good solution to the problem you were experiencing?

I can concur that having the reply box be different sizes depending on how you got there is very annoying.  It should default to the same size everywhere, all the time.

Second, logging in should return you to the exact same place you were before logging in.  It's super annoying to be looking at post or getting ready to reply, logging in, and then being returned nowhere near where you just were.  It certainly didn't use to behave this way.
