Button in grid cell WITHOUT repeater

I would like to use a table column containing buttons (or navigation widgets) that redirects the user to another mashup. I encountered the same problem here How to add "Button" in the column of grid? where is the solution in the form of Repeater. But I cant use it due to its speed. Is there a different solution?

Personally, I was thinking of using HTML as a column type, such as embedding a picture, and by clicking on it use the HTML (and JavaScript) to hide a hidden navigation widget that redirects the user to another mashup. Is this possible? If so, then how?
