Hi,

Is it possible to change the background color of a page by clicking a button or selection in drop down?

yes,

 

You can create few css classes and on change of dropdown you can pick any of the css and bind it to css of a container. It will start reflecting.

I believe you have to write your own custom CSS to achieve this

yes,
