Question

Labels

I would like to (restart?) the discussion on the use of Labels.

Just take a look at the Labels of the "Assembly Design"

HamsterNL_0-1576306849136.png

We have Labels called "PTC Apps", "Troubleshooting" and "Connectivity" with only 1 hit, and the label "Other" has 4.728 hits.

Here are the Labels for "Part Modeling"

Needless to say, the labels are quite useless as they are now.

Are there any plans to introduce new (meaningful) labels?

Labels seem to be doomed for a number of reasons:

    (1) They are assigned by the person making the initial post. Often, these questions are being asked by someone with very little experience with Creo. And, usually, if they're asking a question, they are frustrated about some aspect of the program and when it comes to picking a required label, will do a "oh, whatever" and just pick "Other" or something similar.

    (2) Once labels are designated, how in the world do we get them properly assigned to all the old content? I don't know if there is a method in place currently for the original poster to "fix" the labels, but even if there is, how do you find the time to go back and repair all of your content?

    (3) I think when the forums were moved, then moved again, a lot of stuff got "bucketed" into a big heap, probably under "Other". This stuff would need to be sorted, too. Without some sort of super-smart automated categorizer, I don't know how this would ever get done.

One might also wonder, just what purpose do the labels serve? I can't recall any time in the last year or two that I've even attempted to use them. When I am seeking information about a problem, I find it a lot easier to "google" it and pick through those results.

This is great feedback. @KenFarley and @HamsterNL

History on Labels --when we migrated from Jive to Lithium (now Khoros) platform the grouping of content was different. All Creo content was thrown into either Creo Modeling or Additional Creo Questions.  The Creo Product Management Team and the Creo Champions helped me identify what the "right board/labeling" structure should be.  The Champions analyzed specific threads to help set up an auto-mapping (script) of content into one of the correct boards then if the community thread didn't fit a label or the mapping strategy it was thrown with the "other" label just so it could be moved (at least) into the correct board.  That being said, the "goal" of labeling was that the behavior going forward on new posts "after 2017" would be categorized with a label to make it easier for members to find content.

We do have one other issue though regarding labels.  When a ThingWorx Moderator "moves a post" over to the Creo Assembly Board, if it has a label like PTC Apps the label comes with the content over to the correct board.  Last Spring I had an intern assigned that would go through and "clean up" the erroneous labels.  So PTC Apps and Troubleshooting should not even be an option in Assembly Design if you go to "start a topic" it isn't even a label choice.

Thank you for raising this topic and reminding me that it is time for me to go back through and "clean up" the labels from move requests.

I know another community that actually assigns this job to their "Community Leaders" 🙂   Maybe I should do that!

Is there a way for me to fix the labels on my own posts? I just took a look and didn't see anything that seemed promising.

I am once revisiting the Labels

I am glad to see that a lot of Labels have been cleaned up, but also a few new ones have appeared.

For example, the Assembly Design labels:

Do we need Labels like "Proactive Support Tools", "Knowledge Base and Search", "Case Management tools" and "eSupport Portal"?

I would much rather have labels of the different Creo versions ("Creo 4", "Creo 5", etc.)

Now that we have one major pool of Creo topics (3D Part & Assembly Design with over 105k topics!!!) the use of labels is even more important.

Sadly, only 27.5k labels have been assigned to posts...that's just 26% of all posts. In fact, as one post can have multiple labels, the number of unlabeled posts is probable a lot more.

One major issue now is that we have labels which are useless, and that a lot of useful labels are missing!

For example, we should have labels which indicate which Creo version someone is talking about!

And the label for Human Factors Design can be removed (sorry @Jaime_Lee)

@Jaime_Lee, guess we are not going to do anything about the labels then? 😭

    @olivierlp,

Maybe, as the new Community Manager, you can pull some strings together with @Jaime_Lee to get more useful labels?

    Lol....good call @HamsterNL

@olivierlp  helped get a button changed for Accepted Solutions which you can learn more about here. I am sure he might have an idea for "release version" indicators as well!

We have already been investigating a solution with the Community Team for your specific request around "Creo Release" version.

"What are Jaime Lee's Irons in the fire"....well...more so backend stuff,  but we are ramping up more recognition programs.  This announcement here was only the start 🙂  More to come!
