Best Methods to Specify Class Finishes

I'm looking for suggestions as to which technique you use for specifiying class finishes (ie: Class A, Class B, etc.) for cosmetic inspection. What do you do and why? Can it be used effectively on a top level assembly drawing of a finished product with dozens of parts?
