How to improve 3D PDF base export performance

Are there any configuration file settings or modeling practices that help improve 3D PDF export performance in Creo 12.4.5? My company is looking to switch from 2D drawings to an annotated 3D PDF, and it works great from individual parts and small assemblies. When trying to export higher level assemblies, especially ones that have multiple PCBs in them, Creo almost always crashes during the export process. We still experience this issue even when heavily simplifying PCB parts. Has anyone else had this issue and were able to mitigate it?
