Indicate painted surfaces

Hello and sorry if this is a question that has been answered before but I could not find anything searching.

 

How do you commonly indicate a painted surface? As an example we make some parts out of ADC12 but they are painted only on the outer surfaces? I can give the part the correct material but then if I would like to add a surface treatment, how would I do it?

There is no "standard" for surface coating indications on drawings or models. You will likely have to develop something that works for your company/applications.

 

For drawings, we've done all kinds of stuff to convey to manufacturing (internal and external).

the one below shows something that looks like dimensions to show different coatings on different areas. We've also done hatched areas, surface coloration (sometimes difficult due to b/w printers)

A note on the drawing indicating the finish referring to a color map in the model that is shown in a shaded view(s).

 

Create quilt using the surfaces of the solid model.

Place this quilt on a layer in the model.

Color code the quilt to indicate different finishes.

Hide the layer in the top level of the drawing.

Modify the view properties in the drawing where needed to display the color map layer. Display shaded views on the drawing required to document this.

 

Add a note to define a color map key:

i.e.  Red surfaces to be painted per spec

     There isn't any standardized way to indicate and assign a treated surface? Like there is for surface finish? I would preferably have the different treatments as metadata for the part.
