LISTED VALUES FOR SKETCH DIMENSION

Hi,

 

when I put the subassembly, wich parts are constrained to the straight lines in the picture below, in an assembly, I would like to modify the green circled sketch dimension from a value of 1160 mm to 1400 mm with 20 mm pitch dimensions: how can I do it without relations?

Is there a method that allow this procedure with flexible dimension?

A little more information may help for what it is that you are trying to achieve. Are you expecting the user to change the value or does the value change to 20 pitch increments based on some other parametric relationship? Why is it that you don't want to use relations?

 

The obvious answer here is a family table. You can control that dimension with a family table for as many instances as you want. Family tables come with performance drawbacks so if this is going to end up being assembled into a larger assembly then maybe that's not a good option.

 

If you want the user to just pick a value upon opening then you might look at Pro/Program. That allows you to prompt the user to pick an option upon opening and you can put logic in a little bit like relations. Note that if you have never used pro/program it is not super user friendly. Its a bit like writing a simple script (program) for how the part opens features.

 

Flexibility allows you to change a dimension / parameter / feature at the next higher assembly but it can't be constrained to specific increments. In the background Creo is using an on the fly family table to perform the flexibility.

Hi Chris3, I would like the user to enter a value between 1160 and 1400 mm with a 20 mm step, and as you said, a family table has performance disadvantages, so I won't use it.

What are the advantages of using Pro/Program instead of relations?

Pro/Program can be used to make the user type in an input every time the assembly/component is opened. It was unclear from your initial post if that is what you were looking for or if you just wanted the number to round to a 20 mm increment. If you just want rounding then relations is the simplest, lowest performance cost for this.

If I am understanding the requirement, you can create a skeleton model with the geometry created for each instance using the 20mm pitch. With this skeleton built explicitly, no relations are required. When you create the skeleton use copy/paste and increment the dimension for pitch by 20mm so you only have to create 1 set of placement geometry that you can then copy. You should also be able to pattern this as well if you chose to.

I have noticed that in one of your replies you stated that "I would like the user to enter a value between 1160 and 1400 mm with a 20 mm step". In light of this desire for user interaction with the model then I would concur with @Chris3 that Pro/Program would be the method to use. I would say that the use of Pro/Program would not eliminate the need for relations necessarily.
