Print Filename

The first line in the print dialog asks for a file name. I'll enter a value. When the file is plotted, the file name is suffixed with a "_1" before the extension. For example "plot.hpgl" becomes "plot_1.hpgl". What does the "_1" mean? Are other values possible? Is there a way not to have it in the file name?
