Ref Dims in Drawing mode

What controls the display of ref dims in drawing mode? I want my ref
dims enclosed in parentheses, not followed by REF. I've set
'parenthesize_ref_dim' to yes in my config.pro and I still get ref dims
with 'REF' instead in my drawings. I've looked at the dimension area of
the DTL file and don't see anything that seems to relate to ref dims.
