Switch from ME10 to creo-parametric

What is the best procedure for using current 2D layouts in Creo? This involves large factory layouts built from multiple ME10 2D parts.

Wow - I have not heard ME10 dropped in a conversation for about 20 years. :)

DXF works pretty well.  If you need a batch import it can be done pretty quickly with Nitro-CELL or CREOSON.

Basically you get your files exported from ME10 to DXFs (put them in a folder)

-- then loop through the DXF names in the folder, and import to Creo Drawings.

You might have to test to make sure your import settings are correct … but it should work pretty seamlessly.

Thank you for your reply.

The reason we are still working with 2D layouts in ME10 is that the layouts are too large to maintain entirely in 3D. The advantage in ME10 is that we define each machine as a separate part and use only the top view generated from 3D for this. I therefore wondered what the workflow in Creo should be to be able to maintain large plant layouts there as well.

Totally good and logical example.

The workflow is simple in my view.

  • Export your ME10 items/layouts to separate DXF files
  • Ensure Creo Config Option is set → dxf_block_to_pro_symbol = yes
  • Import each DXF file into Creo (drawing target)
  • Create Symbol(s) using the imported geometry (define a symbol placement origin - hopefully consistent)
  • Save/Write the Symbol to your Symbols Directory (create one if necessary (will have a .sym extension)
  • NOW - you have a Creo Drawing Symbol of your 2D Profile you can place in any drawing (1 or multiple)
  • DONE! :)

The conversion process automation could be automated to a point - depends on what your specifics are for the definition of the symbol(s).

Dear Dave,

I tried it the way you described. In principle, the method works, but it isn't exactly easy—especially adjusting the scale, which has to be done manually; I believe there’s a factor of 25.4 involved. I’m used to this when loading DXF files into ME10, though I have no idea what causes it.

Sounds like some good progress… congratulations.

 

Hmmm - the 25.4 factor is likely a drawing units problem or a symbol scale problem (metric to english scale factor).  Difference between source (ME10) and target (Creo) unit/scale settings.

 

I would look at the Creo drawing settings for when you import and create the symbol.  you might be able to record a mapkey as part of your import process to select all content imported and scale it as a workaround.

 

Just a hunch.

the 25.4 factor


There is also the file named  `UserConfig.con`   in the directory %AppData%\PTC\Creo Elements Direct Drafting 20.7\20.7 with some settings inside: 

CustomUnits                   OFF
Units mm
UnitsScale 1.0

Modern Drafting versions do have a user Interface for those kind settings for the DXF Translator.
