CCX - comparative tracking index

When adding parameter(s) to a part for COMPARATIVE_TRACKING_INDEX.  Demo showed adding value to be applied to a feature.  System allows selection of SURFACE, QUILT, BODY etc. Is the system set-up to use these element types (How ? ) - I have had zero success when trying to add anything BUT a surface.
With a complex part file that simplifies a supplier assembly or design concept I have encountered the need to add over 20 surfaces, what would be the best technique to simplify selections, (e.g.; can a quilt be created and used? ).
