Question

appcf file modification

What setting do you need to modify to get output close to adobe distiller. When using the standard.appcf the file size is 300 mb for the manual I am publishing. I would like to replicate the standard and press quality settings used in adobe distiller. I have looked in the help, but I am not sure of all the settings that would need to be adjusted.

Thanks

Hi Bryon,

I think your question is a bit too vague for anyone to offer a proper response. In what way would you like the output to be "close to adobe distiller"? You reference a 300MB file size, does that mean you want the PDF smaller?

Assuming you just want the PDF smaller, we have found that large PDF file sizes are almost always due to the images contained in the PDF. In rare occasions it can also be due to font embedding (particularly for Chinese fonts which contain thousands of gylphs). If you have a copy of Adobe Acrobat you can use the "Audit Space Usage" tool to identify which parts of the PDF are too large, e.g. https://acrobatusers.com/tutorials/how-to-audit-and-optimize-a-pdf-file

If you are able provide more detailed information about what you're after, then someone may be able to provide a better response.

Thanks for the response Gareth, Yes file size is what I am after. We currently use fosi and SMA with distiller. When out put a file we use the press and standard options. When publishing my test map through the standard.appcf file it produces a pdf file that is 354.5 mb. I then created a postscript file. Using the postscript file, I sent it through distiller and created the two version we require, a web version (Adobe Standard: 27.7 mb) and a print version (Press: 139.4 mb), these are the sizes I would have expected to see out put out of appcf. We have tried modifying the appcf file but it seems that as soon as you turn on image compression, it causes publishing to fail. Here is a case about file size https://support.ptc.com/appserver/cs/view/solution.jsp?n=CS213411&art_lang=en&posno=3&q=image%20compression&ProductFamily=Arbortext&source=search. We have downloaded the sample files and have published with limited success so far file size is with in 2 mb of the standard.appcf file.

I will try the adobe audit space usage tool and see what it says. We use all cgms in editor, mostly line drawings from IsoDraw.
