Problem using Direct PDF and EPS using non standard fonts

Hi,

we try to use the direct PDF feature with the Arbortext Editor 5.4 M140
and Print Publisher (client side).

Some EPS graphics are using non standard fonts.

These fonts are not embedded inside the PDF-File and are replaced by the
Courier font.
When using the distiller instead of direct PDF no problem occur.

Listing these fonts under the <embedalways> element in PDFCF-file has no
effect.

So I searched the Customization Guide and found the Procedure
"Adding Fonts Used By Graphics" -> "To add TTF fonts"

When I start the command: instfonts TTFINSTALL ... I get the message
that the file pstilldll.dll
is missing.

I have looked into intro different AE installations, pstill directory
contain never a "pstilldll.dll"
I tried nevertheless the repair function of the installer, with no effect.
So I don`t expect an installation problem.

Has anybody out there got knowledge about this feature/problem?

    I don't know if this will help you, but in my installation of Arbortext Editor 6.0 M040, the Arbortext Editor\bin\ folder contains a pstilldll.dll file. I am running Print Composer (not direct PDF). I don't know if this will help you with 5.4 direct PDF, but that is all I could find.

    If I can assume by "Print Publisher," you're implying PE, then you'll find the "pstilldll.dll" file under the Arbortext-path\bin folder.If you install the Arbortext Architect, you'll also have the file in the same location on the Architect machine. I don't believe it's installed with the Editor only option.


    That file is responsible for building PS/PDF files for the publishing process.

    Just a thought, but are the fonts installed on the local (client) machine?

    He probably does mean "direct to PDF" which is a separate feature. The "direct to PDF" feature is installed with PE or with the licensed version of Styler, not the "free" version of styler that is part of the regular editor or architect installation. I have no idea which files are associated with that feature.

    In Arbortext Editor 5.4 M080 with the Print Composer option installed, ‘pstilldll.dll’ is in the <arbortext-path>\bin directory.

    Check the ‘Help|About Arbortext Editor|Session|Components’ information to make sure Print Composer (or one of the other print options) is installed.

    In the Session information you can also check that the Arbortext Install Path is correct. Arbortext 5.4 is a 32-bit application and should be installed in Program Files (x86) on a 64-bit Windows PC.

    Hi Ed,

    thank you very much.

    I´ve searched everywhere for pstilldll.dll, but not in the AE install
    path, :-).

    I found the file on AE 5.4 in the same location.

    I copied it to the AE\pstill folder, now the command line fails
    with an other error, I guess this is called progress.

    Sounds like I have to copy the ttf file out of the "windows\fonts" folder.
    I leave that for Thursday.

    Did you look in the the AE\bin directory? This is where pstilldll.dll should be. It does not belong in AE\pstill.

    Perhaps the directory name pstill is misleading you.

    We have used the “instfonts TTFFULLINSTALL” method in the past to add non-standard fonts for EPS processing via PStill.

    It works fine, but it is annoying to have yet another “moving part” to take care of (why can’t PStill query Windows automatically for any fonts??).

    BTW, we found PStill quite slow at EPS handling and it also produces output that is not quite as good as Distiller. One of our major customers switched to Distiller for those reasons.

    It has been a long time since we did any comparisons, but we have also found that Distiller creates better-quality PDF than any other Arbortext PDF method (PE/E3, PDF Direct, etc).
