Question about ArborText's XML code

I was experimenting with some of the suggestions from my last question about changing the starting element and I saw some things in the XML markup that made me curious. First was this line, . I was wondering what it means. I think it has something to do with an entity list but I don't know what. Second was the following:

I am specifically wondering about the Caret1 reference.

Any ideas?
