Bulk Creation of Document Items

Is there a way to create a tracker item of type "Document" via the REST API?  I have 10,000 documents to upload along with some meta-data and am looking for a programmatic solution.

PTC Support has indicated that there are no APIs to create tracker items of the Document type.  I am hacking up an extension right now to see if I can do it myself.
