How do you make a reference point on a shape?

im just trying to make a line connecting two shapes but i cant get the line to join them because i can never select a point that's actually on the shape, very frustrating...

It sounds like you are creating a line in a sketch and trying to have it snap to geometry behind the sketch. If so, open the sketch "References" dialog (this is on the left side of the command ribbon in the sketch tab) and add the reference geometry.

If I've misunderstood, please provide us with more detail and perhaps a screenshot.
