So, is there a limit of 500 items per layer?

    Looks more like a limit to how many items it can highlight from picking the layer.

    Check the config. pro option layer_item_highlight_limit; defaults to 500.

    Weencounter this often because of rules-based layers. We can have more than 500 items on the layer but it takes rather long to display the items when the layer is selected and do not have any special config option set.
