SUMMARY:

PTC says that the ovals conform to DIN 406-10 but doesn't explain
further. DIN 406-10, section 3.2.6.1, explains that an oval "frame"
identifies "check dimensions," which are characterized as "requiring
particular consideration when the scope or stringency of inspection is
specified."

I read that to mean that you can use the oval frames to designate dims
for some type of inspection--first article, ongoing, whatever--but that
you must define the type of inspection. We'll probably stick with a note
like "Dimensions within an oval frame shall be used for First Article
Inspection."

Thanks, Rick, for pointing me to the DIN standard.
