I had a suggestion come in after my summary that ended up working
perfectly.... thanks Glenn Beer & Arnold Collett. As Glenn put it:
"Use the find dialog as you mentioned then in the options pulldown
choose "save querey". It will ask you for the name of a layer, call it
whatever you choose. Like maybe "annotations".
Hide the layer."
I hope this helps the others with this problem.
