Question

32bit Pro/E on 64 bit systems.

I am having memory shortage issues on XP32. I now have a win7 64
machine at my disposal. I am not ready to run the pro/e wf3 64bit
version because there are many toolkit apps that would need converted
and I want to test things now.
I am assuming tat the 32 bit WF3 would have as much memory at its
disposal as the 64 bit version because its the OS that is allocating the
memory. Is this thinking correct?

No it isn't. The compiling of the code for a 32-bit app limits the memory that the program can use.
You have the same limitation with a 32-bit app running Win7-32 or win7-64.
The only way to get the additional memory for the app is to upgrade to WF3 64-bit for Win7-64.

Mark, Unfortunately that is not correct.

Pro/E 32-bit code has the same 2.5GB memory limit as all other 32-bit
software (and OS's).
If what you are saying were true, there would be no need for software
companies to release specific 64-bit software.

The 64bit machine with say 12GB of memory will let you open lots of 32-bit
apps and you can push each of those apps to their memory limits
simultaneously. (which can be a benefit to users)... However, as soon as
the xtop.exe process hits 2.5GB it will crash.

I've tested all of this pretty thoroughly. The "theoretical" memory access limit of the 32 bit universe is 4 gig.


32 bit ProE on 32 bit Windows - ~2.75gig (with 3g switch enabled)


32 bit ProE on 64 bit Windows - 4 gig


64 bit ProE (requires 64 bit OS) - somewhere in the exabytes

So is it safe to conclude that 32-bit Pro-E performs better on 64-bit OS


Our reason for not using 64 bit Pro/E is the error messages we encounter in embedded and stand alonebrowsers. Pro/e itself had no issues. But windchill users were getting compatibility error messages all the time.

I have no issues with win XP-64 and win7-64 running WF4 m150 64 bit code with WC 9.0 m050.
I use IE 8 for the browser.

If you have errors, then check that you have the latest JAVA installed and all IE patches.

32 bit ProE on a 64 bit OS isn't any faster, but somewhat larger memory models don't crash. For those modelsdancing near the 2.75 gig memory limit, that extra memory headroom can be a huge improvement. As you share models with other folks running 64 bit (who don't have your memeory constraints) you will increasingly run into situations where you can't even open the master reps of their assemblies.


64 bit ProE:


Everyday tasks run 5-10% faster, for no reason that I can explain, but it is true.


Virtually unlimited memory capacity


Random "Matrix our of bounds" errors (which crash the ProE session) almost never happen


Models are 100% backwards compatible, except for the ability to exceed memory limits of 32 bit, but simplified reps can be used to workaround that issue... but that does not help for drawing files.

We are running xp64 & Win7 64 with 64bit ProE. No problems with PDMlink and the embedded browser. I think you need to talk to PTC about the Windchill errors your getting.
