Kepware Upgrade from 6.17 to 6.18

We have KEPServerEX v6.17.269 installed in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment and are planning to upgrade to v6.18.318 at the earliest.

Before proceeding, we would like to understand any potential impact of this upgrade. Based on our assessment, we expect no impact on the existing project configuration and runtime operation. However, we would appreciate confirmation on the following points:

1. OPC UA Certificate-Based Communication

We are currently using OPC UA certificate-based communication between KEPServerEX and connected systems.

Could you please confirm:

  • Will upgrading from 6.17.269 to 6.18.318 have any impact on the existing OPC UA certificates?
  • Will the OPC UA server and client certificates remain unchanged after the upgrade?
  • Is there any scenario during the upgrade where certificates are regenerated or reissued?
  • If certificates are regenerated, will we need to re-establish trust relationships with all upstream and downstream OPC UA clients/servers connected to KEPServerEX?

Our primary concern is ensuring continuity of existing OPC UA communications without requiring certificate re-trust activities across connected systems.

2. Upgrade Methodology

Could you also confirm the recommended upgrade approach for this version transition?

  • Can KEPServerEX v6.18.318 be installed directly over the existing v6.17.269 installation (in-place upgrade)?
  • Or is it necessary to first uninstall v6.17.269 and then perform a fresh installation of v6.18.318?
  • If an uninstall is required, will the existing project configuration, licenses, certificates, and settings be retained, or are additional backup and restoration steps recommended?

As this system is operating in a regulated pharmaceutical environment, we would like to fully understand the impact and required precautions before scheduling the upgrade.

I would like to inform you that KEPServerEX v6.17 to 6.18 is generally considered a minor version upgrade and is expected to preserve the existing project configuration, application data, and security configuration.

  • Existing OPC UA certificates should remain intact 

  • Existing OPC UA Server certificates should continue to be used after the upgrade

  • Existing OPC UA Client certificates used by KEPServerEX for outbound OPC UA Client connections should also remain unchanged

  • No scenario requires certificate regeneration

No, re-trusting certificates on connected systems should not be required because the certificate identity remains the same.

  • Yes, KEPServerEx v6.18 can be installed directly over v6.17.
  • Please follow the steps outlined in the article CS300341 to upgrade KEPServerEX from v6.17 to v6.18.

Note: Before proceeding with the KEPServerEX upgrade, please generate an ARU and perform a complete backup of the project.

Application Report Generate:

1. Click Start Menu| All Programs.
2. Select Kepware\KEPServerEX\V6.
3. Select "Basic" Application Report.
4. Just click next to the end.
5. Save and send as a case attachment.
