Mathcad Prime COM API to automate workflows

Experts,

I am exploring how to leverage the Mathcad COM API to automate for different  workflows:

For already existing worksheets how can I start accessing worksheet content and extracting variables and their calculated values for further processing or integration with other applications (this can be any application). Also, Is it possible to generate Mathcad worksheets and reports from scratch using the API, including creating and populating both text and mathematical regions through code?

I would appreciate any recommendations, workarounds, or alternative approaches for achieving these automation requirements using the Mathcad COM API or other available methods.

I believe you haven’t registered for PTC’s upcoming webinar, Mathcad API in Action; that should cover what you’re seeking right from the source.

(Not that this should stop Community members from answering your questions in the interim.)

PTC Marketer for Creo and Mathcad. I run their YouTube channels, some Creo campaigns, and all Mathcad campaigns and communications.

The API is a fantastic thing and also think the webinar is a good way to see what the API can do.  What the API does from help system.

  • Open and close PTC Mathcad Prime
  • Open, close, execute, recalculate, save, and print PTC Mathcad Prime worksheets
  • Control the appearance of windows
  • Retrieve information about regions
  • Assign and retrieve variables, matrices, or strings
  • Set variable values and get calculation result

It does not programmatically create the regions of a worksheet or a worksheet.  It works on worksheets and regions that already exist.

It uses a method that predefines the regions of a worksheet that the API can input values and get output from.  Below you can see the predefined inputs regions “l” and “B” where the API can set the values and predefined outputs “out” and “here” where the API can get the values.  API cannot create the equations out:=2*l or here:=3*B.

API is a powerful tool and I use it.

I am foreshadowing that there is an alternative that can programmatically create a worksheet and regions from scratch with code (Python or C++ only)  whereas the API has multiple language support.   The difficulty is that creating a worksheet from scratch using code takes far longer and is far more difficult than just creating the Prime worksheet using Prime.  So you need to justify that it is worth the effort, like programmatically varying the contents of the generated worksheet based on program control structures within the C++ or Python code.

First watch the API webinar and see if it fits your usage requirements.  Come back if it does not.

Perhaps you can elaborate on your proposed use.

Cheers

Terry
