We need assistance with installing Mathcad on a new PC.

Dear Sir/Madam,

We need assistance with installing Mathcad on a new PC.

We currently have:

2 licenses for Mathcad 14 (CD-based)

1 license for Mathcad 15 (CD-based)

However, we are encountering errors during installation.

Please guide us on how to properly install these versions on a new system, and help resolve the installation issues.

Critical Data Points Required for Mathcad Installation

 

As a start - one would need

 

1. Target System & Method

 

  • Host Operating System (OS): What is the main OS running the computer? (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Sonoma, Ubuntu Linux).

  • Installation Method: Is the installer running directly on Windows, or via a virtual tool?

    • If virtual, state the specific tool: Wine, CrossOver, Parallels (with Windows OS), VirtualBox (with Windows OS), etc.

  • System Architecture: Is the computer 64-bit or 32-bit?

 

2. The Error

 

  • Exact Error Message: Quote the entire error text, including any codes (e.g., "Error 1324," "MSXML 4.0 not found," "Licensing failed (403)").

  • Error Timing: When does the error appear? (e.g., Installer launch, Prerequisite check, License setup, End of file copy).

The versions you have are no longer supported. Ideally you should get in touch with PTC. This is a user forum and as such installation issues are best handled by the developers of the software.

    The error, "The host id of this system does not match the host id specified in the license file" 1, is expected when transferring a node-locked license to a new physical machine, as the unique hardware address (Host ID or MAC address) has permanently changed.4

    The only required solution is to obtain a new license file from PTC bound to the new computer's ID.

     

    Phase 1: Diagnostic—Identify the New Host ID

     

    You must first determine the exact 12-digit hexadecimal address (Host ID) of your new PC that PTC's licensing system recognizes as valid. Native Windows commands are often insufficient; the proprietary PTC utility is the most reliable method.6

    Action 1.1: Use the PTC HostID Utility (cpu_id.exe)

    1. Download the correct 64-bit or 32-bit version of the cpu_id.exe utility.6
    2. Open the Windows command prompt, navigate to where you saved the utility, and run it.6
    3. The output will display the required ID (e.g., PTC HOSTID = 00-11-AA-BB-22-CC). Copy this 12-digit number precisely; this is the new Host ID you will submit to PTC.6

     

    Phase 2: Request—Re-host the License via PTC Portal

     

    Use the new Host ID and your original product information to request a new license file. This process formally transfers the software entitlement to the new machine.5

    Action 2.1: Obtain New License File

    1. Gather your prerequisites: The new Host ID from Phase 1 and your original Sales Order Number (SON) or Product Code.10
    2. Navigate to the official PTC License Portal (commonly located via the PTC Support site).11
    3. Log in to your PTC Basic Account.
    4. Submit a request to update or re-host your existing entitlement. You will provide the necessary product identifier and the new Host ID.10
    5. PTC will process the request and email you a new license file (typically a .dat file).13

     

    Phase 3: Application—Configure Mathcad with the New File

     

    Once the new license file is received, you must tell the Mathcad software where to find it.

    Action 3.1: Apply the License

    1. Save the new .dat file to an accessible, secure location on the new PC (e.g., C:\ProgramData\PTC\licensing\).14
    2. Start PTC Mathcad Prime (or the version you are installing).
    3. If the license wizard does not launch automatically, look for the Activate button within the application.10 (For older versions like Mathcad 15, you may need to run the command: mathcad.exe /license from the command prompt).15
    4. In the Mathcad License Wizard, select the option: "Configure product to use existing license".10
    5. Choose the 'File' configuration option and browse to the new .dat file you saved in step 1.14
    6. Click Configure License or Apply. The License Status should turn green upon successful validation, and the software will run.13
