Appearances broken when importing into Illustrate

When I import a PVZ into Illustrate, some model appearances appear as black. I have tried changing the model appearance and saving it as a new PVZ, but that doesn't seem to help.

This may be too late for OP, but maybe will help someone else in the future...

 

This can happen when using assembly appearances in Creo. Illustrate doesn't keep assembly appearances, but it will keep part appearances. To make sure appearances carry through to Illustrate, make sure all your appearance work is done at the part level, i.e. open each part in its own Creo window, apply appearance to the part, and save it.
