If I create an illustration containing a linked 3D Solidworks file, does it update if I modify the files from SW as would happen with Creo Parametric?
Are there any other alternatives for maintaining the connection?

As long as you chose "Link" when you imported the source file the illustration will update when a newer version of the source file is found.
There are settings to let you control what happens when a source file is updated, they can be found in:
Options>Global>General>Loading
